(197,179 posts)I heard this from a right winger at work.
The first amendment only says that the government can't tell religions what to do - it has nothing with keeping religion separate from government.
When he said it myself and another older (and devotedly Catholic) co-worker's eyes about popped out of heads. I looked it up - that rewriting of history has been made very popular in the rightwing religious world.

(109,266 posts)"You know who first said "Separation of church and state?" Adolf Hitler. It wasn't in Thomas Jefferson's letter to the Danbury Baptists. It came out of Hitler's mouth. So the next time your liberal friends bring that up, ask them why they're Nazis."
Never mind that it actually did appear in Thomas Jefferson's letter to the Danbury Baptists.
They really are jaw droppingly stupid.

(21,925 posts)modeled on the over-the-top world of Tia Bagheure, where everyone is dressed in George or Martha Washington attire and Ted Nugent has become a patron Saint, depicted in church holding a rifle in one hand and the baby Jesus in the other. Or maybe that movie has already been made and its title was Ideocracy.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
