Mother Jones' statistics: 73% of mass-shooting perpetrators (years 1982-2012) have been white

62 mass shootings have occurred from 1982-2012 according to statistics compiled by the website Mother Jones.
44 were white males. One was a white woman. This represents a 73% of shooters, according to a basic calculator. Spree killings were counted as one. "We included six so-called "spree killings"—high-profile cases that fit closely with our above criteria for mass murder, but in which the killings occurred in more than one location over a short period of time." http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2012/07/mass-shootings-map

The percentage of white people in America is approximately 78% according to the census: http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/00000.html

In the years closer to 1982, the percentage was even higher.

while it can be argued that 44/62 is a huge white male/total ratio compared to the proportion of white males in the US population, it can also be argued that the 20/66 non-white male ratio is also enormous compared to white non-white-male/population ratio.

My conclusions:

1) It is ill-advised to vilify whites, or any other race in regard to mass-shootings. Focus on the psychological and social causes behind these acts is more productive.

2) It is imperative to gather statistics and sources before making claims.

3. Interesting thing about the numbers, there were 16 mass shootings in 2012...

Assuming all 16 shooters were legally in possession of firearms (which they weren't)...
and an estimated number of legal gun owners in the US is 80,000,000,

% of legal gun owners involved in mass shootings is ~00.00002%

Assuming all 16 shooters were mentally ill (which hasn't been established)
The estimated number of persons with mental illness in the US is 78,000,000,

% of mentally ill involved in mass shootings is~ 00.00002%

Hmmm, interesting number, over all mentally ill and over all gun owners , they present the same average risk of being a shooter in a mass killing.

So, then, assuming all 16 shooters used bullets discharged from firearms
Well, no need to provide the numbers....

And furthermore 100% of shootings regardless of the number of victims in 2012 and every other year involve bullets discharged from firearms.

I'm interested in countering the characterization of all the mentally ill as dangerous, just as you probably are with respect to wrong characterization of gun owners.

Mass murders are high-profile and horrendous, but they are really rare and create a fraction of the homicides and woundings.

Centering the focus of gun violence on the elimination of statisitically rare events from society, will seriously twist society and require many rights and liberties being taken.

Most of those rights would be outside of the 2nd amendment and fall on honest, law-abiding people. Be they mentally ill or well.

I don't know what Mother Jones' goal is here, but regardless of which race or gender is responsible for the majority of gun violence in the US, taking guns away from law-abiding gun owners only leaves the criminals armed and the rest of us defenseless.
