DU Can be Such a Wonderful Place

I got this PM from another member here on DU. It was so wonderful to have another member show appreciation and take the time to actually send me a PM.

The PM follows. I have blocked out the name of any member that was snippy.

Just wanted to give you props for being so nice when xxxx was kind of snippy--unnecessarily snippy, I thought, given that you hadn't declared yourself an expert and said you were interested in learning more.

Every once in a while, threads on DU seem like a dogfight that starts with a little nip here and another one there and suddenly there are teeth everywhere. So, well done for being gracious and not letting that happen.

but there's usually a DUer who knows something about it and is willing to share their knowledge without being condescending.

And in addition to someone who knows something about it they usually provide a link that will give you even more information. A never ending source of information in my opinion.

item they've just encountered that DU has been discussing for days, which really helps when my middle schooler gets stuck in an endless question cycle.

Du is usually a couple days ahead of the issues once they filter through, say, blogs or newspapers and make it to more general circulation or evening news.

I'll often hear my partner or friends talking about an interesting issue and get a feeling of deja vu.

There is way too much negativity on the board these days. It's reaffirming that there still are GOOD people on this board, who come here to catch up, learn and share different perspectives.

I've learned a lot during my years at DU. I've also learned that there will always be posters who come here only to argue. It's frustrating to be caught in the midst of those types of threads.

I appreciate you not only sharing this PM, but also I second the kudos expressed in the PM for YOU being gracious and keeping things civil in your prior posting.

...not being face to face is difficult, as nuance and inflections are lost in the ether. Being a Democrat......in what was once a Democratic Republic is NOT easy, if it was, everyone would be on board, there are many facets to this gem, including opinions, so let's take it easy on each other and save the venom for where it belongs, please.

I have been so guilty of escalating an argument and letting my ego get the better part of me over just being kind and appreciate another person's argument.

I have to say I am enjoying myself more on DU now than I ever have before. Good for you for not getting baited into a dogfight by someone's snippiness and I'm glad you got a nice PM.

Otherwise, sometimes we're poopyheads.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?

This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.

As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.

Tell me more...
