‘You must own a gun’: Georgia town passes mandatory firearms law

<>Welcome to Nelson, Georgia, a rural town about 50 miles (80 km) north of Atlanta that passed on Monday the ‘Family Protection Ordinance’, which requires the head of each household to own a gun and ammunition.

“We’re making a statement,” City Council member Jackie Jarrett told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “If you plan on doing us harm, we’ll be armed.”

Jarrett emphasized that the law grants liberal loopholes for those who do not wish to follow the new legal code.

Heard about this on NPR today. Turns out most of the people of that town already own a gun. I think the town is trying to make a statement "I am stupid".

for all you will use it if you don't want to. Have had guns in my household for 40 years. Don't know how to use them or the combination to "his" safe.

Personally, I think it is a good law because Kennesaw has the lowest crime rate in the state. I live next door to Kennesaw in Woodstock and we also have a very low crime rate.

Someone's kid is going to get shot with one of these mandatory guns. Then I wonder how the City Council will explain it to the parents. "We were making a statement."

Wed Apr 3, 2013, 08:18 PM

...doesn't mean mandatory. So you go out and get a gun, because you didn't read the fine print. Or you get a gun, because you believe the false message being conveyed by the law, that guns for protection are a good bet. Or you don't want to be the "outsider" who tries to opt out when "everyone else" is opting in.

Some people will have guns who would not have had them. Some of those will be people who should not have had them. One tragedy with one of those guns happens—a fatal gun accident, a suicide, a murder, a robbery—and the City Council will be hiding from mirrors the rest of their lives. All for a dumb, false message.

of course, maybe SOMEONE is - it can't be 0%. but it's not bloody likely. like another poster said, this place has a very low crime rate.

a larger # of people might be planning to take your stuff, but that's it. they don't want to harm you. they want to rob you. & ideally, they'd like to accomplish that without adding assault or worse to their possible charges.

you have a gun for protection BECAUSE YOU ARE AFRAID.
