MAYFLOWER, AR -- The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has placed flight restrictions on the airspace over the Mayflower oil spill.
According to FAA.gov, no pilots are to operate any aircraft over the area listing "Hazards" as the type of restriction.
The restrictions were issued shortly after 2:00 Monday afternoon, and are effective "until further notice," according to the website.

(438 posts)The TFR or Temporary Flight Restriction says no pilot may operate an aircraft over the area described from the surface to 1,000 feet AGL (Above Ground Level). That's very different than implying pilots may not operate aircraft over the area.

(34,845 posts)With camera technology today, a thousand feet is nothing. We can still get good pictures. Not that we need any more. It's a fucking mess there, we already know that.

(34,845 posts)It's reasonable to think so, which makes it prudent to restrict commercial airspace from the area.
And if you think I trust Exxon in any of this, you would be mistaken. I actually don't think this neighborhood will be able to recover. A good time to rescind all those tax breaks these companies get.

Much ado about nothing, too bad people here are so eager to be negative............as the saying goes, "ignorance is bliss", one wonders why so many DUers are so miserable.

(67,782 posts).....1000 feet is the lower limit for LOTS of areas of the country. It's for SAFETY reasons, no more and no less.
Obviously you've never flown an aircraft.

(30,207 posts)This is media suppression. If air space is safe for flight before a ground disaster, it's safe after. The FAA is part of the government, they could set up a mobile air traffic control on site to assure there were no disasters. It's SOP in war zones. This has far more to do with protecting Exxon than protecting private citizens.

(67,782 posts)....it has nothing to do with "media suppression". The lower level of flight permissible over populated areas and areas that are going though unusual circumstances is 1000 feet, has been since at least the early 1970s when I first took my flying lessons.
To characterize it as anything other is uninformed and ignorant, plain and simple.

(12,723 posts)They do not need a mobile control tower. They issued this restriction because that is how the air system works. Pilots are instructed where they can and can not fly and what altitudes they can do so in.
This has nothing to do with media suppression as anyone can fly over the area above 1,000 feet.

(53,265 posts)I've done aerial photography at over 1500 ft. It's not the best scenario, but it's doable. Certainly, one would rather shoot at 500ft (the usual limit for "non congested" areas, but 1000 ft isn't so bad. For a lot of cities, the limit is 1000 feet anyway.
