KFC Might Ditch Chicken Bones Entirely
But for now, it's got boneless fried chicken chunks
(AP) KFC is stripping out the bones to make it easier for people to eat its chicken. The fast-food chain is introducing fried boneless chicken chunks on April 14 as an alternative to its traditional breast, thigh, and drumstick pieces. The new offering reflects the growing popularity of nuggets and strips that are easier to eat on the go. KFC says nearly four out five servings of fried chicken in the US are now boneless. Based on customer trends, the company says chicken with bones could eventually be pushed off its menu.
The new boneless, skinless pieces are about twice the size of KFC's crispy strips and come in white or dark meat. A rep for the chain says it took two to three years to develop its version of boneless chicken, which performed strongly in test markets including Oklahoma City and Omaha last year.

This is so stupid. Bye Bye "real" food.

(17,651 posts)My first thought was some Monsanto type creating a breed of boneless chickens. What would they do in the meantime......just grind it all together, white meat, dark meat, innards and bind it in artificial chemical stew.......pink goo.
Gross.

(151,269 posts)I'm thinking this is a way for KFC to abandon chicken as something real. Instead, some extruding machine will turn pureed chicken into "chunks" for use to eat and then blow.
Too bad for KFC.

(56,177 posts)I'm sure people choke on chicken bones, probably not fatally, all the time at these places and they were trying to eliminate some of their risk.

(53,194 posts)It will reduce the amount of garbage an individual restaurant generates. Probably half the trash in a KFC dumpster is bones. Get rid of those...
It will also cut down the chain's food costs. Let us say cut-up chicken costs 50 cents a pound in the form they get it in now. Chicken is half bone by weight so the meat actually costs $1.00 per pound. If they can negotiate this to 95 cents per pound of deboned meat, they'll be ahead.
And it would probably be cheaper than that because there is a market for chicken bones: soup companies.
Never mind the fact the American public has shown a preference for boneless chicken...we sophisticated Internet users who only eat fine dining believe all chicken should be served bone-in.
(And this is anathema to all, but I ate the Double Down and liked it. I used a fork tho...)

(11,419 posts)Saying you're doing something because it's easier for the customer is marketing-speak for "we found a new way to cut costs and now we're going to try to convince you it's better all around". Boneless chicken chunks are probably the poultry equivalent of pink slime - bits scraped off the bone, mashed, minced, molded back together: it saves the outlets time and money over having to deal with those pesky pieces of real animals. And the customers take another step away from their food sources.

(12,723 posts)OKC is a major test market for fast food. if I ate the shit I could tell you about all kinds of weird things like the time Wendy's had hot dogs. They served them on a folded over piece of Texas Toast covered with that leftover hamburger soup they call chili.
The KFC ads all have people freaking out and thinking they ate the bones. It makes me weep for the sheer stupidity of it. I did notice they toned down the ads and shifted away from freaked out people so the rest of the country may never see the original stupid-ass ads.
I will not be eating KFC (the shit does not deserve to be called Kentucky Fried Chicken) any time soon. Popeye's it is. I just wish Popeye's still served onion rings. Onion rings and fried chicken were made for each other.
