"....This is not the President's ideal budget proposal,...it is a budget proposal that represents a ' good faith, compromise position ', that reflects the offer he made to the Speaker Of The House, that was 'widely seen as a compromise good faith effort' that met Republicans half way, and it ' reflected the People's Will ' that we address these challenges in a way thats ' balanced & fair '...."

The question: "why is the president proposing to cut SS and Medicare?"
The answer: "it's not what he wants."
Cut SS at the peril of the Democratic Party.
Time to draw the line in the sand.

(57,936 posts)Seniors who rely on Social Security are already living on very little. Those who don't rely on it pay the same taxes as everyone else, in many cases more because they don't get things like child care credits, deductions for housing loans (even if they are paying a mortgage, they have most likely paid it down to the point where they don't pay much interest as the percentage of each payment that goes to pay interest decreases over time).
Social Security pays rock bottom -- just enough to live, just enough to cover your expenses.
It cannot be cut without working hardship on American families as seniors are forced to beg from their kids to get by.
Social Security and Medicare cannot be cut.
And where in the world is the focus on jobs. Why not revamp our tax and bankruptcy codes to encourage businesses to create jobs and protect workers.
Why include Social Security in discussions about balancing the budget? It has nothing to do with balancing the budget.
Obama is way, way wrong on this.

(1,528 posts)Who's expecting to get 100% of what they want? I think most people on the left understand that we'll get very little of what we want from this political system.
Not wanting to lose even more than we have over the last 30 years is not the same thing as wanting to get 100%.

Since there is no longer any such thing as a reasonable person in the Republican Party, our Democratic President has taken it upon himself to (once again) negotiate with himself, compromising with a reasonable Republican who is actually nothing more than a figment of his imagination.
I thought he was through with that nonsense. I voted for somebody who said he was through with that nonsense.
He didn't get anything in return for this behavior during his entire first term.
