Well, I've been in the program for a few days now, and I enjoy it. Am learning the ropes and figuring out stuff that I thought I would never understand, enough to participate with enthusiasm - but there's volumes to learn that in my remaining lifetime, never will.
My cheapie used computer has earned my respect. She's pushing out tasks pretty fast, and I think the way this Dell works keeps it from getting hot. There's a vent in front of the tower and I can feel the gentle cool air coming out.
There are people who use their laptops.
If you are looking for some new hobby, challenge, etc., that doesn't cost money, try Seti. I'm with Einstein, Grid Republic, and it's a very busy group. Has a great message board for questions.

I ran it on multiple machines 24/7 when I lived in CA and had an Internet connection. It was fun watching my stats climb up the ladder as I had some real horsepower to devote to the task. My servers weren't tasked too hard by normal stuff and seti@home fit the bill to make use of all that unused horsepower. My twin core AMD Opteron 64 bit workstation ran two instances 24/7. It was very cool.
Cannot do it now as my only connectivity is through my iPhone.
