After saying my piece, I asked if they were getting a lot of calls about this issue. Not just a lot, but 9 out of 10 calls. Let's keep it up.

Edited to add that I finally got through after trying for more than 20 minutes. The poor woman I spoke with sounded exhausted.

(1,898 posts)that wasn't a threat, that was a promise.
Most Congress critters only respond to either money or enough people telling them that they will support their opponent in the upcoming elections. Since I don't have the money to get my Congress critter to vote my way, I do have the ability to volunteer for his opponent, go door to door and telling my friends, family and neighbors not to vote for him/her. We need to start wielding our power, which is our votes and our time and effort, to make Congress listen to us not just the Koch brothers and their billions of dollars.

(1,388 posts)And since I live close to Chicago where they say to vote, and then vote for your dead ancestors, I called again and again and again. They are very nice to talk with, when you are pleasant yourself. I told them all my republican friends even believed in preserving Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Which they do. It is interesting when you hit a wall, you want the wall down no matter who put it there.

(16,510 posts)And if the damnable thing is still in there after all the petitions, calls and email, we'll have to slam our Dem Senators and reps even harder. They need to be scared out of any thought of supporting any kind of cut to our hard-earned benefits.

(11,064 posts)those who you know are opposed to this.
Do you want them to remember your call? Or do you want to engender a rude response which won't do any good?

(2,526 posts)Even though I have my disagreements with the purpose behind its inclusion, it would be foolish of me to diminish anyone's activism regarding the matter.
This is the right and respectful way to voice your opinion.

(25,930 posts)boots if he learns that we won't support him unless he supports us and kills Chained CPI. Let him know. Usually he takes the President's side on matters. I don' think he can risk supporting Chained CPI. Let him know that he needs to get the President to pull back on this offer to the Repugs.
On edit: Here's his telephone number in D.C. : 1-202-224-2152

(4,186 posts)..and remembered to throw in the response to the defense some of our DU bretheren keep repeating, repeating, repeating.. that truly needy won't be hurt. Means testing of Soc Sec turns it from a program where we're all in it together--to the perception of it being welfare.

(1,362 posts)They'll let torturers go too but they'll surely listen to me huh? I'm all for your enthusiasm but they don't want to listen to you or any other 99%er, unless they can make some press-op out of it to feign concern yet again.

(22,336 posts)Maybe Obama said this because he had an idea how much outrage there would be and anticipated a reaction like this, and hoped to be able to go back to Congress and say, "Look what response there was. Cuts to social security are obviously not what the American people want."

(856 posts)I called two days ago--I had to wait about 10 minutes. I was told while waiting that the operators were volunteers ( because of the Sequester??). The woman was very nice & let me vent & the points I made was my concern for my mother & my aunts about the cuts & questioned why when social security does not contribute to the deficit then why did President Obama even bring it to the table. IMHO, the Republicans Lindsay Graham, John Boehner) are gleeful about this & see it as way to privatize Social Security. The woman was very polite & I thanked her for her kindness. I am going to call again.
