Oh, it was awful. I'm a horror movie fan, but this was just a buckets of blood and gore movie. Literally! It was absolute trash. No story, or anything scary, to say the least. Please don't even think about seeing this movie. I was duped by reviews which I now think were made up by advertisers.

(80,708 posts)That story wasn't really all that much, either.

(20,600 posts)They took the comedy out that was present in the original in this horrible remake. It literally rains blood at one point in this movie. All the movie is close-ups of limbs being teared off of people with accompanying sounds. And people sawing their own faces off. It is just that bad. And not scary, but boring. Just a gross out fest movie.

(80,708 posts)Now "The Shining".. that was a great horror flick. And there's only one murder.
I don't remember feeling that strongly either way about the 1st Evil Dead. Number two, and Army of Darkness, were funny.

(20,600 posts)I'm a sucker and still hold out hope they might make a good one, sooner or later. Stupid me.

(80,708 posts)Fortunately there has been some interesting narrative stuff happening on TV. That's where the good writers seem to have gone.
I don't know about Horror, though. My wife watched that "American Horror Story" show.. I put up with the 1st season, but the 2nd one in the Asylum, I'm like "ugh. enough"

(24,461 posts)These movies creep you out every time, even though you know what's coming. They go beyond a superficial idea of "a scary movie".
Modern horror just relies on startle and gore. YAWN. Seen it, bored by it the first dozen or so times.

Spoiler:
It's a prequel to Alien.

(16,399 posts)Those shows are ****ing scary as hell.

(5,909 posts)Yeah, they scare me. Some are better than others, but most of them are really good. I've seen them all...the first one I saw was "A Haunting in Connecticut" (the movie sucked) and I was so scared I shut it off but recorded it because my husband was out of town on business and couldn't watch it by myself.
I can't remember the last scary movie I saw. I like them but most nowadays are cheesy. I like the old ones (then again I'm old) like The Changeling, The Exorcist, The Omen, Re-Animator (and funny), Alien, The Shining, Halloween...I even thought the first Nightmare on Elm Street was scary.
The reviews on Insidious were pretty good and there were some scary parts, but I wasn't that impressed. I think that's the last one I've seen. I liked the remake of "Let the Right One in" and "May" was pretty bizarre.
"Identity" with John Cusack was a good thriller.
Saw Blair Witch at the theater opening weekend and thought it sucked. I was really looking forward to it.
Sorry for ranting since you only asked me one question and I wrote a novel.

(265 posts)I say watch it anyways. I'm a huge fan of Sam Raimi's work and loved the original...the remake wasn't as good but I was still highly entertained throughout. The film-making style was definitely intended as a tribute to Raimi...the camera zooming quickly through the woods, the buckets of blood (different colors of blood in particular), the nature of the possessed ("We shall feast upon your souls!"
.
The filmmakers who made this remake took elements from the first and second movies and kind of mixed them in...the first Evil Dead was straight-up horror with a good bit of camp mixed in, which is pretty much what this film was. The second and third films had more straight-up humor but more gore. So I feel they focused on the gore from the second movie and the true horror elements of the first...that said, there were plenty of times when I LOLed during the movie, so the humor here works as well.
As evidenced in his other films, including "Drag Me to Hell", Raimi obviously has a thing for bodily fluids and a certain gross-out factor, but I feel like in this remake it's a bit...much. Besides that, my biggest complaint with the movie is that the characters (save for one) were WAY dumber than your average horror-movie folk, which simply annoys me.
Overall, I'd recommend it though.

I don't like to see gore. I like suspense films, but not strictly horror films.

(985 posts)The hardcore horror fans on Reddit rave about it. I'm going to make up my own mind. Loved the original, and I've read that this uses minimal CGI, which I think is refreshing. Buckets of blood? Yay!

(16,916 posts)Make up your own minds, folks.
There was definitely a story - a girl is taken to a cabin to detox as she comes off of a drug addiction. The place has a history, and the history crosses paths with the detox. It wasn't on the level of "The Shining" or "The Exorcist" but what is? It was scary, and yes there was a LOT of gore, but it's "Evil Dead" - it's supposed to be a gore-fest. If you've read any reviews, or seen the original, you're likely to know that walking in.
Oh, BTW, very little CGI was used. The gore is physical and seems more real as a result.

(16,399 posts)I'm not a fan of horror movies, but give me the organic production design of say, "Raiders of the Lost Ark" over that crap that went on in "Crystal Skull" any day.

(108,711 posts)I heard an interview where he said he wanted to do a remake where they actually had a budget since the original was shot for very little money.

(12,022 posts)I'll watch anything- good/bad, expensive/cheap, new/old, long as it's horror. But I did not like the older Evil Dead. I might have to see this new one just since it's got zombies. So maybe it will be on Netflix someday.. not paying for theater tickets though! Thanks for the review.
