Love me some Rachel Maddow...

She barbequed David Axelrod and he deserved it.....

Obama even discussing cutting Social Security is INSANE. Why isn't more money for SS being discussed by the Democratic Party and Obama? What is the rationale for cutting---why can't folks just pay more money? Rachel posed the question and Axelrod looked like he swallowed about 100 hot tacks.

Obama has to stop cow-towing to the GOP. They hate him and won't let him do anything that will be seen as positive. Why is it that everyone sees that but the President?

The GOP will gladly see the country go to hell on Obama watch....it is way past time he realized that.

Old people generally can't work a regular job. Why would you cut benefits? And what now, is the shortfall replaced with....?

Even the GOPers can't touch it. GOPers will say NO and it not because of cuts but its NO because of revenue. Is Pres O setting a trap, yep.

There is already a rationalization for that - No need to replace shortfalls, just use the cheaper than catfood substitutes!
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10022650430

Simple see! I will add to that the practical solution offered up less than a week ago - Dumpster diving!

They live too well already, it offends centrists!
They have not been trying hard enough or they would already do as others advise them while living in suburbia and eating as well as they choose (those advised deserve only peasant food
). Those $600 a month whiners need to do frugal things, advisors assume of course that people aren't already on a diet of rice and beans and are in great health and so can farm large gardens and raise chickens (and have the property for both).

or less because they can't afford the expense.

This is likely a result of the current COLA not accounting for the fact that seniors spend far more on healthcare than the CPI accounts for. Since the current COLA has not allowed them to keep up with healthcare inflation (a dramatically higher rate of inflation) then the chained CPI will accelerate what is already a very serious problem.

You heard right.

What no one yet seems to understand (perhaps not even the President) is that he was re-elected to prevent this kind of thing. It goes without saying, that the GOP will never let any expansion of benefits for the poor, sick, or aged be passed into law. THIS president, and THIS congress have one overriding responsibility. That single objective is to HOLD THE LINE on the social engineering that would turn the poor, sick, and aged into indentured servants to the wealthy plutocracy of this nation! We all KNOW that passing the ACA pretty much shot this president's whole political wad. Hey, it was one hell of an accomplishment! Now kindly do the job of ALL second term presidents, and protect the people who put you in office. We quite frankly don't CARE if you pass another damn thing, just don't let anyone UNDO what you, and progressives before you have accomplished! THAT, and paving the way for Democratic victories in 2014 and 2016 is your ONLY real responsibility!

I worked hard for Obama in 2 campaigns and now I am ready to primary any so called democrat who supports the President on the issue of Chained CPI. In fact I am read to primary any democrat that even supports a grand bargain while the HOUSE is controlled by the gerrymandered republicans. We never voted for a long term bargain and we do not need it now.
Remember Obama did not win the election. He cannot vote but once. We voters won it, and we must make sure our representastives do our bidding or face consequences.
I heard progressives showed up at the White House with 2.4 million signatures. That is a good start. How about we go for 50 million who will vote against any democrat who supports the chained CPI? That would be pretty motivating.

It is a fault of reasonable people to be reasonable so we accepted Raygun and Tip's fleecing (raising the age...way past unacceptable, stealing benefits and diluting wages over a lifetime) and so there was no price to be paid.

That is all well and good (well, not raising the retirement age but fixing an actual problem is what they are there for so you give them a chance to a degree) but the problem is subsequent trips to the well for the same supposed reason got nothing except cheers from the crowd in love with means testing. Now we have had Bush emboldened enough to try to implement a privatization scam and good God, someone claiming to be a Democrat that can't stop trying to cut benefits, the fucking President for crying out loud.

Thu Apr 11, 2013, 02:12 AM
Apr 2013

I was a fan of Rachel long before her run at nbcnews.com.
She was smart and edgy and that's why she got the high profile job. She clicked. She used the opportunity to introduce a lot of new and thoughtful guests.

Then President Obama won in 2008. From sharp criticism of gov't she went to kissing ass. I expected a honeymoon period, esp. from a leftist of her standing, but not this. From foreign policy and war reporting using multiple unofficial and unembedded sources she went to fulltime snoozing with one of the most deeply embedded "reporters" in history, Richard Engel. She continued criticizing republicans, but didn't seriously push the dems to produce the "hope" and "change" that was advertised and, obviously, required. She no longer uses her position to promote those who give voice to the deepest and most researched and investigated left-wing criticism of US and world politics.

Yes, I understand that Obama "evolved" re. LGBT issues over his term, and did some good. But that isn't the whole of politics. And really, what kind of "evolution" is it to finally recognize, in 2012 and not know already in 2008, that universal principles of human rights apply to the people of the LGBT community? Doesn't this, too, show that Obama requires to be PUSHED, and pushed HARD.

So now it comes to this, the top Dems promoting chained CPI, which is the thinnest edge of the extremely well honed wedge, and every progressive on the planet who's interested in US politics knew this was coming a year ago or more. The Reps already using this fact to slam Dems for not protecting their base, the common people - even while saying this might be a starting point for a debate about *real* cuts, so long as the rich continue to be protected. This too was predicted, not just by a few but by the entire progressive community.

The so called "debate", at this point, is simply absurd. Americans are destroying themselves, not recognizing that the 1% who're choreographing this absurdity aren't dependent on *any* country, they are that rich.

This whole damned deal shows that Obama can be manipulated, and that those who pull the strings are the Reps and not the Dems, and *that* shows that Dems in general (both top down and bottom up) have been asleep at the switch. In fact Obama *asked* Dems to have his back, said that he *needed* that. But it didn't happen. The Reps ran roughshod over the Dems, turning politics around, showing that even from a losing position electorally they could, quite literally, silence the Dems. They didn't even have to f'ing filibuster to *win* a filibuster. Think about it (e.g. Rand Paul tried to filibuster, but after 24 hrs he had to take a piss, he lost and something which the rest of the Reps wanted to go thru' *did* go thru'). Around year two of Obama's first term it was to the point where the Reps didn't even have to threaten to filibuster for the Dems to quail, to fail. I give the de facto total win to the Reps, and don't give a f'ing thing to the Dems. Romneycare? Sorry, that's a Rep win, in fact a Rep double win since the Reps can tear the Dems a new one for *owning it* because of Romneycare's inadequacy considering the actual problem at hand, which has been *proven* world over to require the state introduce a single payer, highly regulated system.

Sigh, I wish Rachel would get back her spunk.
