When I was a kid, "Woo!" meant "Yaaaay!", "Horrah!", happy, happy, joy, joy.
What does "Woo!" mean today to you?

(17,671 posts)"woo" is a specious sort of belief that is more rooted in pop culture or consumerism than in an established faith. While both make specious claims about the nature of reality, "new agey" ideology is more likely to be considered "woo".
Since this is a left wing political board you will find Enlightenment empiricism to be the prevalent attitude toward matters of faith. Good luck.

(28,784 posts)and that's the long, long history in western culture of using religion as a way to justify oppression of others.
the Native Americans know this well. The Jesuits who came to the Americas were disgusted that some groups, such as the Iroquois, did not think men should oppress women, for instance.
Empiricism has its faults, too, but the potential to correct those faults is greater when something is based upon reproducible results and evidence - because people can argue those points in a way that others can access.
If someone claims revealed knowledge, the issues come down to matters of opinion and who has the power to force their opinion on someone else.

(26,355 posts)Another example is homeopathy - the type of "medicine" that's unique in that diluting it is supposed to make it stronger, so homeopaths dilute their preparations over and over and over until there's nothing left of the ingredients, not even one molecule, so you're drinking expensive water.

(39,156 posts)...that based mostly on confirmation bias and often are directly contradicted by actual science. They are usually driven by wishful thinking and are a reaction to the seemingly cold empiricism of the scientific method. They include things like quack medicine, pseudo science like astrology or Fung Shue, and hackneyed philosophy sometimes operating under the label of either ancient or newly revealed wisdom.

It's a cop out and meant to be an insult, especially when not accompanied with an explanation actually based in science.

(225 posts)Humanity is off its rocker. We are so wrapped up in the artificial world we have made, we can scarcely appreciate the snow and rain.
Who made 'woo'? Humanity did. Its anywhere our Western minds have spoiled the earth, its resources and our children's ability to appreciate it.
Who made you? The Great Mystery. I still believe we have the capacity to participate in the Great Turning of our hearts to Mother Earth.
