Even at the height of cable ratings, the viewership is miniscule for cable "shows" compared to the total number of possible viewers in the US

That said, ANY live "event" is covered by whomever happens to be on the air at the time, and then everyone else gets in on it as they get brought up to speed/brought back to the studio.
