Former Representative Ron Paul's announcement this week of the upcoming launch of his eponymous home-schooling curriculum makes clear that the end of his career as a gadfly Republican presidential candidate does not spell the end of his role at the helm of a movement aimed at transforming the way Americans think about government and God.
The Tea Party godfather has always enjoyed a devoted following of home-schoolers, a relatively quiet segment of the Paul coalition that frequently has flown under the media's radar... Paul's advocacy of home-schooling is not just about getting kids out of what home-schoolers disparagingly call "government schools".... It's based on the idea that the government is largely illegitimate, and that one must create a society in which the populace will follow "moral" (that is, biblical) laws, rather than the laws created by an overzealous, tyrannical government.
Paul's new director of curriculum development is Gary North, the son-in-law of Christian Reconstructionism founder RJ Rushdoony. Reconstructionism is a movement based on the claim that God granted only limited "jurisdiction" to government, and that biblical law should supplant civil law in all but a handful of circumstances.
Rushdoony was one of the first advocates of Christian home-schooling and a developer of its early curriculums, according to Julie Ingersoll, associate professor of religious studies at the University of North Florida... He later acted as an expert witness in court cases, laying the groundwork for claims that government refusal to allow parents to home-school their children was a violation of the free exercise clause of the first amendment...

(100,133 posts)This hardly seems like the kind of ideology a Libertarian would espouse, on the face of it -- a real wtf regarding Ron Paul.
As for the cult of Christian Reconstructionism, they are terrifying in their determination, scope, and funding. They've been at this for decades now, while Democrats and others on the Left fritter away every opportunity to stay united and focused on getting something done, blissfully ignorant of what the VRWC really encompasses.
Note that this article comes from the UK and not from anything in the US.
God help us all -- just not their god!

(297 posts)Reconstructionism is cover for unfettered capitalism. For Christian Reconstructionists, humans are depraved and every institution is by extension corrupted. God's law is required as the norm to regulate human behavior and social relationships - except the market. The 'free market' is exempted from the corruption of human depravity.
In the books produced by Gary North, ICE, the Chalcedon Foundation, et.al., the application of scripture to the market and to its impact on human life is absent. Maybe it's oligarchy or anarcho-capitalism or feudalism desired by the theonomists, but the refusal to be consistent with its declared principles when it comes to economics is a peculiar feature of reconstructionism.

(5 posts)I literally just seen it in the news today. Google brought up this page, scrolled down to comments...sorry to have posted. Thank you though for the kind reply saying curriculum will probably be anti-government. Was merely curious.

(109,266 posts)They essentially want to overturn the Constitution and replace it with Biblical law - it's just as bad if not worse than Sharia law. If our founding fathers truly intended for this to be a secular society we need to start acting like it and kick these fundie asshats to the curb.

(5 posts)The only biblical law that should govern anyone or anything...one's own actions! If such were the case one believes in a biblical law government.

(47,245 posts)He was convinced of this "Y2K doomsday" stuff, and sold lots of canned food and stuff for survivalists back in the late 1990's.
Looks like now he's decided to put out "Christian" fascism materials.
