(51,076 posts)I love this.
My dad was born in 1897 so as a kid I got to hear a lot of old stories of machines like these old engines and old cars and whiskey making and on and on. The depression etc. I think that is why I can't throw anything away. Why I still make most of my toys. Why I have such an appreciation for life that I have, hearing the stories of what my parents went through to give me life.

(130,908 posts)and as we regulated railroads, their knowledge was sometimes useful. Good to hear of your appreciation!

(53,339 posts)A best friend who'd moved to my SoCal neighborhood from Arkansas was really impressive. Together we made black powder in a mortar and pestle to make our own fireworks and home-made mortars.
I'd worked with tools and did a lot of stuff just by following instructions but making things--especially industrial processes--were a mystery to me. I once took a job in a precision parts company doing secondary operations (lathes, drill presses, multi-stations, cutters, broaches, grinding wheels, etc. plus a lot of custom set-ups) just to learn something. Without some kind of exposure, who knows what a screw machine is--or that it's about far more than screws?

Of course, if you still have access to other sites that's a pretty good clue that just the one site is down and it's not your computer or your ISP.
