WASHINGTON -- A new poll has New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte down a total of 15 points from her previous approval rating in a survey that followed her vote against requiring background checks for firearms purchases. Ayotte's plunge underscores the changing politics around gun control and gun safety. In years past, lawmakers worried that a vote for gun control would bring the anger of the National Rifle Association. In the new reality, votes against gun control also carry a political risk, as the Ayotte (R) poll indicates.
A full three-quarters of New Hampshire voters support such background checks, along with 56 percent of Republicans, according to Public Policy Polling. A WMUR Granite State Poll taken in January and February found that more than 9 in 10 state residents supported implementing background checks at gun shows. It's not entirely clear yet how opposition to background checks will play out at the polls, but there are signs Ayottes vote may have taken a toll.
In October, the last time that PPP surveyed voters about Ayotte, she had a 48-35 approval rating. She has now tumbled underwater, with 46 percent disapproving and 44 percent approving. The 11-point surge in disapproval threatens Ayotte's 2016 reelection, when she could face popular Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan. Ayotte won her 2010 race by 23 points, but in a hypothetical matchup against Hassan trails 46-44.
Forty-five percent of independents in the state disapproved of Ayotte, up 13 points since October. Half of voters said her vote on background checks made them less inclined to vote for her, with only a quarter saying it made them more likely to support her.Among the critical third of voters who described themselves as moderates, disapproval of Ayotte increased by 21 points, with two-thirds saying her vote against background checks made them less likely to vote for her. Only 13 percent said it made them more likely to back her, an overwhelming 5-1 margin.

I don't have any faith in his re-election. He has managed to piss off just about everyone trying to look "bipartisan" but he just looks foolish. The repugs of our State will NEVER vote for him.
And the entire "independent voter" is a myth. He might as well be on a quest for unicorns.

Too late for NH to realize it's mistake.

(8,377 posts)If there aren't any more big gun tragedies in the next 3 years, it will not be an issue for her.
What are the odds of that?
And what are the odds that Bloomberg's organization (and others) will gain traction in the next 3 years? Normally it is foolish to bet against the public's short attention span, but I think this issue may have legs. A lot of that depends on which part controls the two houses come 2015. If the GOP controls both houses, then this issue will be buried deep at sea.

(21 posts)There is a falsehood in the first sentence. I quote:
"A new poll has New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte down a total of 15 points from her previous approval rating."
Her approval went from 48% to 46%. Her disapproval went up a lot (13%). It is the combination of lower approval and higher disapproval (net approval) that went down significantly.
This is bad news for Ayotte, but the journalist needs additional training.

(14,624 posts)Kelly Ayotte sniffing around McGrumpy and Miss Lindsey reminds me of a beta female in a dog pack, hoping for some recognition and that their "status" will rub off on her. I've thought that ever since the whole Benghazi thing started. Good to see that she's being recognized as a nothing.
Sen.Ayotte comes off somewhat goofy. In meeting with several Newtown family members, she stated that her non-support for background checks for gun shows and online sales was due to the burden it would place on the dealers. What about the burden that is placed on the actual licensed dealers in shops that are required to use background checks. She comes off rather dumb.
I guess the burden placed on the families.of firearm violence, the buden placed on communities that deal with firearm violence are not to be considered. This goofy Senator was opposed to the assault weapons ban. Dumb, just really dumb. Where do these states come up with these people like Ayotte?

(10,942 posts)Ayotte is a teabagger through and through. She won her senate race against a weak democratic opponent during a year when republicans lied about the ACA and jobs to win many races. Americans are wiser now, certainly New Hampshire residents, who turned republicans from office by a stunning margin during the 2012 election. Hassan is leading New Hampshire well, if she keeps that up, a race with Ayotte won't be close, Hassan will smash Ayotte.
