(1,572 posts)There was a time that you could convince me that our representatives would change. That time has passed.

(2,596 posts)I don't know anyone who would trust a wealthy lawyer for anything, and yet they vote for them to run for office.
We also need a way to counter the myth of "we need someone who understands business to run the country" as in "no, businessmen got us into this mess".
I've had a hypothesis for a while that we need to pull the cap off of the number of representatives in congress. Force them to dump their staffs and work in teams, while the number of representatives is set at 1 rep per ever 50 or 100,000 constituents. At least temporarily it would make it harder to pour money into a campaign and with the more direct responsibility to the people, they may stay off the corporate money longer.

(9,933 posts)Lemmeno when cause all I see are people divided over trivial stuff too busy trying to keep their head above water working longer, harder and for less. Far too busy to get anything together to demand change.
We need a combination of FDR and Teddy Roosevelt to renew and strengthen the New Deal and root out corruption....

(18,998 posts)And our organizations have mostly been co opted and have become money raising machines that raise money for single issue and ignore the weightier matters of stolen elections and corruption of the government and out an out theft by Wall Street and bankers.
I suspect we must hit bottom before we wake up...but it could be to late then.

(7,142 posts)the #1 reason IMO is because of the corporate-controlled media. They control the narrative, yes, even on most of MSNBC.
They helped shut down OWS, they helped create the T/Potty. They make the narrative about debt instead of jobs, etc., etc.,

(62,325 posts)that as soon as they see any sign of the public looking elsewhere for real news, they immediately crack down on them, no matter how peacefully they protest.
Also, they deliberately worked on taking over the media. Deregulation of the media was a huge part of the plan and with the help of both parties, it has been accomplished.
However, they haven't yet shut down the internet, although I'm sure they are working on it.
We need leaders willing to bust monopolies in media, energy, and finance.
24 hour news reminds me of annoying opinionated television sportscasters telling their audience constantly what they are seeing, hearing, reading and even sometimes feeling. It's best to turn down the volume and think for oneself.
