My 91-year-old Great Aunt was informed by our local Meals on Wheels that, because of the sequester, they are running out of food and once they run out, there will be no more food deliveries.
In order to qualify for the program you cannot have the ability to obtain/prepare food on your own. Now, I can easily provide for my aunt and ensure she gets good, nutritional meals but I have to wonder about those without family/friends to care for them. The numbers could be in the millions. How can this NOT have tragic consequences?
How is it that there seems to be all kinds of programs that have managed to get themselves exempted from the sequester yet Meals on Wheels gets the axe? There is no justification for this.

(20,166 posts)I don't think it was a mistake or an oversight that the Harvard paper that's been used as the basis for austerity has been exposed as deeply flawed.
More smoke and mirrors from the elites to dupe people into thinking we have to do this.

(59 posts)It is a sad day. When it affects them, waiting at the airport, something is done but let it be Head Start, Meals on Wheels, help for the disabled, then their heads are in the sand. They are a disgrace. What has happened to this country.

(16,334 posts)and it's been a year or more since they got word that the program was being scaled back. It started with cutting back on the number of meals and then the days of delivery. I have no idea how the latest cuts will affect them. She griped about the government then but it's the same one she voted for because of her stance on abortion. I often remind her that there's plenty of money for war.
I had to laugh at the last statement. How true.

(58,162 posts)that`s the sad thing about this bullshit. playing chicken with people`s lives is going to backfire on the democratic party. obama decided to throw the less fortunate under the bus because he had to prove a point . that point could to cost him the house and probably the senate.
if my wife did`t work i would be one of those who would benefit
oh well ,ya get what ya vote for....

(6,278 posts)Leave it to the representatives of the people to ride to the rescue of folks stuck on planes or in airports... God knows that's far greater tragedy than the elderly losing access to proper nutrition.
Priorities, people!

(797 posts)All these entitlement programs would have been permanently terminated anyway along with major cuts to many social programs that many rely on.
This republican induced sequester is only a temporary inconvenience.
