White House says the US may use military force against Syria

The White House says that United States President Barack Obama may approve of using military force against the Syrian government.

Early afternoon on Friday, White House press secretary Jay Carney said that the administration has a number of options in regards to handling reports that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has used chemical weapons, and those routes include but are not exclusive to using military force.

Fielding a question from the media during the afternoon presser, Carney said that he could not speculate on what action if any Pres. Obama will pursue against Assad, but said “as a general principal the United States retains the ability to act unilaterally.”

Pres. Obama spoke to reporters hours later about the allegations during a meeting with Jordan's King Abdullah in the Oval Office, calling the developments a “game changer” in terms of how the US might respond.

I hope the US doesn't get engaged in another war. Has there ever been a time when the US wasn't involved in some kind of war?

plan for taking over the ME and restructuring it so we have control of the oil and of the strategic countries that can be used to get to the oil.

So far, strike off the list 'Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan. We're working on Iran, same lies, same recipe. We're getting close to Syria now, we've been working on it for two years. It's taking a little longer than they would have liked. The world isn't buying Iran, the piece de resistance, but one thing you have to say about Neo-cons, they never give up.

Police action, conflict, hostilities and now “kinetic military action.” They’re all euphemisms for that word that this White House and many before it have been so careful not to say: War.

It might look like he's about to let the republicans and the pentagon push him into getting us involved in another war but he's too smart to let that happen.

His clever strategy will be revealed to us in due time I'm sure.

This whole thing is a propaganda campaign based upon bad intel that's taken on a life of it's own - a lot like Iraq WMD did in 2003.

money for the American people? I thought they were going to have to steal money from the SS fund in order to 'help' reduce the deficit? Does this mean they FOUND money somewhere and Democrats don't have to let Republicans steal from the SS fund again??

Amazing, there is always money to kill people with, but never any money to keep the 44,000 Americans who die every year from lack of just a small fraction of what these wars cost, alive.

Who do they think they are kidding???

Enough, it's up to the American people now. If they don't rise up en masse against this insane and criminal idea, then we deserve everything we get as a result of it and I never, ever again want to hear anyone complaining about 'terror attacks'.

“We have to act prudently,” he told reporters before a meeting with King Abdullah II of Jordan. “We have to make these assessments deliberately. But I think all of us, not just in the United States but around the world, recognize how we cannot stand by and permit the systematic use of weapons like chemical weapons on civilian populations.”

He said he wanted “more direct evidence and confirmation” of chemical weapons use and vowed “a very vigorous investigation” to determine that. “Obtaining confirmation and strong evidence, all of those things we have to make sure that we work on with the international community,” he said. “And we ourselves are going to be putting a lot of resources into focusing on this.”

The White House has pointed to the precedent of the Iraq war that President George W. Bush started in 2003, wary of again taking action on the basis of incomplete or possibly inaccurate assessments of another Arab country’s weapons of mass destruction.

In the event that there turns out to be empirical evidence of the use of such weapons and action is agreed upon legally by virtue of a UN resolution, I am okay. I have a problem with illegal, unilateral war built on a pack of lies, not the use of military force as part of a legitimate coalition which has decided that a madman unleashing chemical warfare isn't something that should be ignored.

I will wait and see. It would be ridiculous to jump to conclusions either way at this stage.
