"SNIP.......................
The RNC's "autopsy" was really darn proud of the party's governorships:
The GOP today is a tale of two parties. One of them, the gubernatorial wing, is growing and successful. The other, the federal wing, is increasingly marginalizing itself, and unless changes are made, it will be increasingly difficult for Republicans to win another presidential election in the near future.
The problem for the GOP, is that its "growing" gubernatorial wing was entirely the result of the 2010 mid-term elections, elections that even Republicans admit were flukes. That was a base election, and Democrats didn't turn out.
In 2012, Democrats did lose the North Carolina governorship, but they retained their hold in open seats in (red) Montana, New Hampshire, and Washington, while red-state incumbents in West Virginia and Missouri held on easily. For what it's worth, Democrats knocked off the Republican incumbent in Puerto Rico, and came within three points of picking up the Indiana governorshipa race no one thought was even competitive, in a state Mitt Romney won by 10 points. None of this evidence of a resurgent Republican gubernatorial wing.

(12,041 posts)The worst Republican governors are likely to be swept from office. Rick Scott, Scott Walker, Kasich, Snyder, they will all be gone after 2014.
The Senate I am more worried about unfortunately, the Senate electoral map heavily favors the Republicans this time around. 2016 should be better for us on that front, but in 2014 maintaining a Senate majority will be a tough battle.

(12,977 posts)Haley Barbour was running the Republican Governors Association that year, and he's a long-time master of dubious politics. Remember that million dollar donation from Murdoch's News Corp.? And that other million from David Koch? There was a lot of funny business going on that year.

Although the Democratic Governors Association had a 12 percent increase in donations from the first quarter, the increase is paltry compared to the 109 percent increase by the Republican Governors Association -- $9 million to $19 million.
In the second quarter, the Republican Governors Association received three donations more than a million dollars: $1,480,000 from the Michigan Chamber of Congress, $1,000,000 from David Koch of Koch Industries and $1,000,000 from News America Inc., a subsidiary of News Corp.

(3,786 posts)This A-hole won by only a few thousand votes in a year when most Democrats stayed home (thanks, guys). It BETTER not happen again. We have spent the last 4 years fighting his right-wing, dumber-than-fuck-all agenda as a result.

(103,856 posts)Mid term elections are notoriously under-attended, and even though WE are following closely, many people are NOT.. Incumbency is a valuable commodity.
Republicans are "long-game" folks, and their stacked legislatures have laid a clever trail of stinkbombs along the voting trail.. No doubt, they know pretty well just how much participation they need to hold the statehouses.
I would postpone the victory parties until we see how much money the DNC plans to spend on getting back the governorships/SOS/legislatures/house seats.

(103,856 posts)we need FL, WI, MI, OH, PA, IA. NV, AZ, & NM
The rest are "no-way-no-how"
In addition, we NEED some more in the state legislatures & SOS positions.. just governor is useless if the legislatures can override a veto..
