Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsMassive DU History Fail.....the CONGRESS passed "Loyalty Day' in 1958.
(a) Designation. May 1 is Loyalty Day.
(b) Purpose. Loyalty Day is a special day for the reaffirmation of loyalty to the United States and for the recognition of the heritage of American freedom.
(c) Proclamation. The President is requested to issue a proclamation
(1)calling on United States Government officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on Loyalty Day; and
(2)inviting the people of the United States to observe Loyalty Day with appropriate ceremonies in schools and other suitable places.
Since 1960, there have been over 50 proclamations of "Loyalty Day"--including by Presidents Kennedy, Carter, Clinton, and now President Obama. But it was really fun to read the two separate freak-out threads on this utter non-issue, blaming President Obama.

(8,492 posts)...I'm sorry I missed it. (The freakout, not the day. )
Edit: Crap. I spoke to soon. I'm sorry, but May 1st in my home is Beltane. It's also a friend's birthday. Neither of these things infringes on unions, workers, etc., etc. Neither does 'Loyalty Day' for the love of nitpicking.

(53,661 posts)Segretti's involvement in the "Canuck letter"[2] typifies the tactics Segretti and others working with him used, forging a letter ascribed to Senator Edmund Muskie which maligned the people, language and culture of French Canada and French Canadians, causing the soon to be Democratic presidential candidate Muskie considerable headaches in denying the letter and having to continue dealing with the issue.
Many historians have indicated over the years that Muskie's withdrawal from the Presidential primaries, and the disastrous Iowa primary loss to George McGovern that precipitated it, were at least partly the result of Segretti and some of the other "Ratfuckers" creating so much confusion and false accusations that Muskie simply could not respond in any meaningful way.
In 1974, Segretti pleaded guilty to three misdemeanor counts of distributing illegal (in fact, forged) campaign literature and was sentenced to six months in prison, actually serving four months. One notable example of his wrongdoing was a faked letter on Democratic presidential candidate Edmund Muskie's letterhead falsely alleging that U.S. Senator Henry "Scoop" Jackson, a fellow Democrat, had had an illegitimate child with a 17-year-old; the Muskie letters accused Senator Hubert H. Humphrey of sexual misconduct as well.[3]
After testimony regarding the Muskie letters emerged, Democrats in Florida noted the similarity between these sabotage incidents and others that involved stationery stolen from Humphrey's offices after Muskie dropped out of the race. A false news release on Humphrey's letterhead "accused Rep. Shirley Chisholm (D-N.Y.) of being mentally unbalanced" and a mailing with an unidentified source mischaracterized Humphrey as supporting a controversial environmental measure that he actually opposed.[3]
In the 1976 film about Watergate, All the President's Men, Segretti was played by Robert Walden.
Segretti was a lawyer who served as a prosecutor for the military and later as a civilian. However, his license was suspended for two years following his conviction. In 1995, he ran for a local judgeship in Orange County, California. However, he quickly withdrew from the race when his campaign awakened lingering anger over his involvement in the Watergate scandal. In 2000, Segretti served as co-chair of John McCain's presidential campaign in Orange County.[4]
He holds a B.S. in Finance from the University of Southern California (1963) and a J.D. from UC Berkeley School of Law (1966). While at USC he became associated with Dwight L. Chapin, Tim Elbourne, Ron Ziegler, Herbert Porter and Gordon C. Strachan, they all joined the "Trojans for Representative Government" group.

It's been working for years. We get so many misrepresentations posted to divide us and have us at each other's throats. This guy was still involved a decade or so ago, why would they stop now when it's so effective?
Rush savaged Hillary when she tried to reform healthcare, saying it would create Death Panels. Palin used it in 2000, and they've never stopped using these lies and distortions. That is just one example only.
It won for them in 2010 and they plan to use it for 2014, too. So, there it is, writes like a ratfuck, makes you feel you've been ratfucked, it is ratfucking. I'd apologize for the language, but I didn't invent the term.

(90,642 posts)I spit in Nixon's general direction.
Someone, maybe Hunter Thompson, said something to the effect that when the last frozen level of Hell had disgorged its occupants, then the ghost of Richard Nixon would once again walk the Earth. Something spooky and embittered like that -- sorry, I really can't do it justice.
I used to think there was no one I could hate as much as Dick Nixon. I was pretty impressed when my father-in-law, late into his 80's and sometimes losing his English (it was only his 3rd or 4th language), started talking about Nixon with me, and suddenly the old man was practically purple in the face and pounding the arm of his chair, and I am not sure what language he was using at that point, but Nixon had been dead for decades at this point. I'm glad my FIL did not live to see Dubya take office.
Speaking of spitting, I have a friend who lives in the South who has to drive through Crawford to visit her mother and brothers. When Dubya still had his pig ranch, she would make a point of spitting out her car window as she drove through Crawford.
I'm wandering. Ahh. Perhaps a fantasy novella could be written about Dick Cheney's original heart being stolen from the medical waste bin to be used for blood magick. Talk about wish-fulfillment.

(46,436 posts)Did the president also acknowledge the significance of May 1 to the labor movement? If he didn't, then I understand why pro-labor people are disappointed. There are plenty of patriotic holidays in the course of a year -- Memorial Day, Independence Day, Veteran's Day, Flag Day, President's Day, etc. etc., but Labor only gets one day, and the significance of that has been usurped by giant end-of-summer sales and back-to-school sales. You never really feel like LABOR is being celebrated.
So I understand the frustration. Patriotism and capitalism (i.e., the sales) seem to take precedence over the hard-fought rights of workers, which some in government would happily take away.
So did the president also acknowledge the importance of the labor movement on May 1?

(4,950 posts)"International Workers' Day is the commemoration of the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago. The police were trying to disperse a public assembly during a general strike for the eight-hour workday, when an unidentified person threw a bomb at them. The police reacted by firing on the workers, killing four demonstrators. "Reliable witnesses testified that all the pistol flashes came from the center of the street, where the police were standing, and none from the crowd. Moreover, initial newspaper reports made no mention of firing by civilians. A telegraph pole at the scene was filled with bullet holes, all coming from the direction of the police."[1][2][3][4]
In 1889, the first congress of the Second International, meeting in Paris for the centennial of the French Revolution and the Exposition Universelle, following a proposal by Raymond Lavigne, called for international demonstrations on the 1890 anniversary of the Chicago protests.[5] May Day was formally recognized as an annual event at the International's second congress in 1891.[citation needed]
May Day has long been a focal point for demonstrations by various socialist, communist and anarchist groups.
After the Haymarket Massacre, US President Grover Cleveland feared that commemorating Labor Day on May 1 could become an opportunity to commemorate the affair.
Far-right governments have traditionally sought to repress the message behind International Workers' Day, with fascist governments in Portugal, Italy, Germany and Spain abolishing the workers' holiday. 1 May in the US is celebrated as Loyalty Day."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Workers'_Day
Although those groups tend to demonstrate on May Day, I still don't know why or how it would be political suicide for Obama to support an International Day for Workers. Especially since we have so many (international workers) and the big wealthy capitalists are always asking for more.

...Between 1981 and 1983, Obama is supposed to have visited Mars twice, by way of a teleportation chamber called a jump room. Basiago, a fellow chrononaut, told the website Exopolitics that he saw Obama walk back to the jump room from across the Martian terrain. To acknowledge his comrade, Obama is said to have told Basiago, Were here apparently, with some sense of fatalism.
It is not known what exactly Obama did on Mars. (Socializing Martian health care, perhaps? Building a birth-certificate printing press?) His mission was a perilous one, according to Basiago and Stillings. The CIA wished to establish a defense regime protecting the Earth from threats from space as well as a legal claim to territorial sovereignty, making Obama something of a Martian conquistador. Presumably, Obamas CIA handlers needed him to acclimate Martian humanoids and animals to their presence in order to secure the U.S.-Martian alliance. (Well bet you werent even aware of Martian animals.)
Simply put, your task is to be seen and not eaten, an elder chrononaut, retired Army Maj. Ed Dames, is alleged to have told a young Obama.
You can scoff at the idea of Obama on Mars. But it explains a lot. Obviously the birth-certificate controversy is a side effect of Obama forgetting to sufficiently establish his fake identity as he learned to manipulate time and space. (Dugan has a demonstrated record of supporting space travel; the jump room must be broken.) And who else but a man accustomed to keeping the countrys most explosive secret would be comfortable waging so many undeclared wars? Ignore Basiago and Stillings at your own peril. If Obamas reelected, the U.S. is finally colonizing Mars.

(6,635 posts)"workers rights" were contained in the Constitution, but the Labor Movement has always been a part of the fabric of the American way of life. The movement is currently in decline, and I was in on the beginning of the decline. I was a PATCO air traffic controller on August 3, 1981, and was the President of the PATCO Local at my facility. I was proudly fired by Ronny Raygun, fined by a Federal Judge for violating an injunction, and still ardently support unions.
Having said that, May 1st has been Loyalty Day in the United States for decades. In Hawaii May Day (May 1) is also Lei Day, and is celebrated as such. President Obama, like almost all presidents before him since Eisenhower, issued a proclamation recognizing May 1 as Loyalty Day as requested by Congress when they passed the Public Law. He is only following tradition, and protocol.
You may bash President Obama for whatever reasons you choose, but he has done nothing wrong with this proclamation of Loyalty Day. I am also a combat veteran, and fully appreciate the meaning of loyalty and sacrifice.

July 18, 1958
Public Papers of the Presidents
Dwight D. Eisenhower<br>1958
Dwight D. Eisenhower
1958
The American Presidency Project
I HAVE TODAY approved House Joint Resolution Number 479, designating May 1 as Loyalty Day, and calling for its appropriate observance by the people of this Nation. I am in accord with its purposes.
The naming of May 1st as Loyalty Day conflicts, however, with the observance of that day as Child Health Day pursuant to joint resolution passed by the Congress in 1928.
I therefore urge that the Congress enact legislation amending the act of May 28, 1928, 45 Stat. 616, by substituting the first Monday in October for May 1 as Child Health Day, thus avoiding the conflict that would otherwise result from simultaneous observances for different purposes.
Signed:
Dwight D. Eisenhower, President

(4,435 posts)Take a look at what that radical left-wing Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) has to say about "Loyalty Day":
Patriotic Day-Loyalty-
LOYALTY DAY
Loyalty Day originally began as "Americanization Day" in 1921 as a counter to the Communists' May 1 celebration of the Russian Revolution. On May 1, 1930, 10,000 VFW members staged a rally at New York's Union Square to promote patriotism. Through a resolution adopted in 1949, May 1 evolved into Loyalty Day. Observances began in 1950 on April 28 and climaxed May 1 when more than five million people across the nation held rallies. In New York City, more than 100,000 people rallied for America. In 1958 Congress enacted Public Law 529 proclaiming Loyalty Day a permanent fixture on the nation's calendar.

(19,768 posts)"recognition of the heritage of American freedom"
Shouldn't heritage be replaced by "endurance" or "eternal nature" or something like that?
The freedom is what creates, or should, the loyalty.

(27,787 posts)DU members are encouraged to celebrate by selecting something Obama does for which no outrage is necessary and then apply a full dose of outrage in an OP on DU.

(135,425 posts)We've got people here who think Obama could just wave a magic wand and do what he'd like--change equality laws, rewrite the Constitution, circumvent the Justice Department...
What is most amusing is that the average naturalized citizen knows more about how our government works than most "Born In The USA!! USA!!! USA!!!" citizens. It's embarrassing.
We really need civics classes back in the schools, as a separate module.
