Will Israel's bombing of Syria set off a wider Mideast conflict?

I don't know the answer to this but it seems to me that bombing Damascus as the Israelis did last night, is an inflammatory move that will have repercussions for the region.

I don't understand the rationale behind bombing Syria. How on earth can this move enhance Israel's security?

...I don't see it. Pretty much this is a proxy war between Iran/Hezbollah and the Syrian/Alawite regime with various players already involved. Israel's attack was unwarranted, they're already "vested" in this mess in destabilizing all sides here. It works in Israel's interests to see two sworn enemies fight against each other as long as possible...
