"THE THING THAT STRUCK ME when I first met my cousin Houston was his size. He wasn't much taller than me, if at all, and was slight of frame. On the other side of the visitors' glass, he looked surprisingly small, young for his 22 years. The much more remarkable thing about him turned out to be his vocabulary, vast and lovely, lyrical almostuntil it came to an agitated or distracted halt. In any case, all things considered, he seemed altogether extremely unlike a person who had recently murdered someone."

(14,941 posts)1. This was so hard to read.
A fascinating but oh so sad and disturbing read. I pity all involved in dealing with serious mental illness.

It is surreal to click on the story and realize it was this one, such a terrible thing...

(145 posts)5. My stepdaughter
has been saddled with this horrible disease for decades. It is so frightening when things begin to go bad (probably from non-compliance). She is in a good group situation and works when she can but has been in one of those criminal psych wards more than once. We constantly fear cuts in her benefits, which would be devastating.

This was a hard read but a real reminder of the complexities of the human condition.
Thanks for sharing. Now, where did that cat nap photo thread go? I need something soft and fuzzy.

They found him guilty of first degree murder. Apparently the next phase is mental competence.
