At the intersection of Fate and Lotto, Thuan Le made a very fortunate error.

The California single mother of four is thanking her lucky stars after mistakenly slipping an extra dollar into the self-service Lotto machine at her local CVS store in Mission Viejo.

That superfluous dollar wound up getting Le the SuperLotto Plus ticket holding the five winning numbers -- 5, 33, 25, 46, 32 -- plus the Mega number, 26, selected randomly in the April 24 drawing.

In all, Le won a $14 million jackpot.

To win the lottery (some odds are as high as 300,000,000 to 1) and retire. Because God knows you can't make a decent living working in the US, unless of course if you are very, very lucky. And if you are lucky enough to come from a poor or middle class family and have a decent job with a good salary and decent benefits (and are able to keep it beyond age 45), then you might as well play the lottery.

In Orwell's 1984, that was the only hope that the proles had, even though it was secretly controlled by the govt.
In 2013, it is about the only hope we have. Like you said, the odds are nearly impossible. So is a quality life for the majority of us. We are the land of plenty yet the oligarchs get all of OUR resources for free.... ahhh capitalism for the elite.
