"Indestructible" K-9 who changed legislation dies
He survived beatings, stabbings, and paved the way for harsher punishments for criminals who injure police K-9s in the future

ROSEVILLE, Minn. — The Minnesota K-9 who survived multiple beatings and a stabbing that changed the abuse of a police K-9 to a felony was euthanized Tuesday.

Major, 11, was the best police dog a handler could ask for, according to Roseville officer John Jorgensen. He had persevered through an often-fatal condition that caused his stomach to fill with gas, had pots broken over his head, was kicked and stabbed, and had almost drowned chasing a suspect into a lake, according to Pioneer Press.

In 2010, Major was paralyzed in his hind legs after he was repeatedly stabbed by a burglar. He was forced to retire, but the incident led to Gov. Mark Dayton signing into legislation a harsher penalty for those who assault a K-9 causing substantial bodily harm.

Using a wheeled sling to preserve mobility, he lived out his retirement with Jorgensen and his family, according to the article.

Jorgenson was forced to put Major down after his health further deteriorated.

Police officers and they are animals? I'm pretty sure I used "their" correctly unless you're joking. legendleague3 May 2013 #7

K-9's are the officers partner. They should be treated the same under the legal system as any other police officer.
You harm one, you go to prison, period.

Why should cops get special protections, especially their freakin attack dogs.

Let me get this straight- I, an ordinary citizen, can get assaulted and it's a lesser offense than if their DOG gets assaulted? Sounds to me another charge to throw on anyone who pisses the cops off (especially minorities guilty only of "contempt of cop.&quot

I didn't mean to come off as mean to the dog. I just don't like police officers and their animals being given better protection under law than the citizens their supposed to be protecting.

Maybe make all animal cruelty a felony instead of just police dogs?

Good going. If someone's grammar bothers you perhaps you should PM them rather than call them out on a thread. Then you won't have to be publicly embarrassed when you're (not your) wrong. I'm sure they're (not there or their) not just waiting around for your (not you're) wisdom to enlighten them.

Since the space in titles on DU is limited you can shorten "belongs to them" and use the common term possessive next time you're being a grammar nazi.

Don't have much of a problem with it either, honestly. I like cops: they keep me safe from burglars, murderers and rapists; they're generally-helpful; and they're union-labor.

I have a lot more use for cops than the average person I meet who tells me they hate cops.

Edit: The dog's a cop. Assault a cop...go to jail.

Edit: The dog's not union-labor obviously.

I'd love to see a movie based on this dog's life.

In one way I could see it as "exploitative", but in another way I could see it as spreading the word about the wonderful jobs these dogs are doing and celebrating this wonderful dog's life and service.

As a multiple dog owner, the hardest thing to do is to look into your best bud's eyes for the last time, knowing, rationalizing, ..... just looking into those eyes.
