(84,711 posts)who think they are doing "Good Work" on the civilian side...but they get swept up in to that MIC...and in many cases they are USED. But, it employ's them...and they still "hope" somehow they are "doing good." The quick learners know it's a "Boondoggle," and use it to further their careers.
Caveat: I have friend who have kids working for USAID. They graduated from "High Value Colleges" and some went to "Prep Schools..Undergrad".... And, they were nice kids...thought they were doing good...they TRAVEL a lot... They become accustomed to the "Perks" and they have families and learn NOT to question too much.
They are good kids...but, imho, many don't realize how they are being co-opted for stuff that really is against their principles. (at least as I knew them growing up)...but, then...things change when your life depends on income and you start to have a family that's dependent on you. Or, even if BOTH of YOU...work for USAID..
Not trashing USAID...but, just saying...it's not always what the idealists of us think it is in practice. Works well in some areas like "Peace Corps" ...but, if you are in a "Hot Country" you are open to manipulation for agendas you might not always be aware of until you are involved and ...it's a job...feeds your family...so, one learns to "look the other way" in some countries where you are assigned.

(24,692 posts)About three-quarters of Americans believe that Washington should reduce the governments budget deficit through a combination of spending cuts and tax increases, with the greater share coming from belt tightening, according to a mid-February Pew Research Center survey. But 57 percent of Tea Party leaning Republicans think all deficit reduction should come from spending cuts.
In particular, Tea Party sympathizers would like to see a cut back in aspects of American soft power. More than eight-in-ten would decrease aid to the worlds needy, compared with 43 percent of all other Americans who support such economizing. And 41 percent of Tea Party adherents would reduce the State Departments budget.
But U.S. hard power continues to receive Tea Partyers backing. Only 15 percent want to cut the Pentagons budget (compared with 27 percent of all other Americans who favor such action) and just 13 percent support reducing spending on anti-terrorism defenses.

I've no problem with providing assistance in case of natural calamity to foreign peoples but I have no desire to build others 'war machines' so they can kill one another only to turn their sights on us.
Enough is enough and this country is on the path to bankruptcy should the fed's printing press run out of ink and China/Japan suspend our credit limit.

(24,692 posts)"Enough is never enough" when it comes to taking care of the less fortunate regardless of where they were born, where they live, what they look like or what language they speak. It's time to look out for "Number 1"; I'm tired of looking out for poor people" is not my idea of liberalism. I hear enough of that from the right.
