Why Does the Corporate Media Focus on the Rights of Gun Owners More Than Those Stopped and Frisked?

FAIR, via AlterNet:

The aggressive tactics of law enforcement, an ongoing controversy in communities of color, have recently come into the national media spotlight—if briefly—as the constitutionally dubious practice of arbitrarily stopping and frisking ( mostly black and Latino) citizens by police officers was put on trial in federal court in March (NPR, 3/21/13). But you would be hard pressed to know much about the issues if you get your news from national mainstream television.

When it comes to conversations about citizens’ rights, the lion’s share of coverage has gone to perceived infringements on constitutional rights that are of concern mostly to white Americans—like gun ownership.

When the Sandy Hook massacre put gun control back into the national conversation, the debate over personal gun ownership rights undoubtedly resonated predominantly with their disproportionately white (and conservative) supporters (Pew Research Center, 1/13). The passions that arise over gun control were on display when conspiratorial Internet radio host Alex Jones (Extra!, 2/11) argued on CNN’s Piers Morgan Tonight ( 1/7/13) that gun control represents a “police state.”

The fact is that many Americans feel that they are living in a police state (Raw Story, 3/6/13; CounterPunch, 2/8/13)—but few get a platform to talk about it. One can only imagine the national dialogue on racial profiling and violations of the Fourth Amendment—protecting individuals against “unreasonable searches and seizures”—if national media paid attention to those who passionately oppose stop and frisk (Extra!, 3/12). ..................(more)

Hell of a lot more money in gun sales than there are in frisking minorities. The corporate media will never trash their own. If it makes money it gets a free pass.

all of them have an angle $$$ for the most part

there is not one alt-media I know of who wouldn't do anything, anything, anything to become Tim Russert and then have a new hungry alt-media rail on them.

Like the Clash. They sure sounded sincere on their 1st album, then it sold mega copies and all of a sudden the whine no longer sounded as sincere now that they were rich

first thing Bruce Springsteen did when he got mega famous was marry a hollywood star and move west then when he lost everything he had he came home. But many don't forget the blue collar star going Hollywood

I suppose people can want Rudy Giuliani back, yeah, NYC was much better with Rudy there.

your op article is an altmedia article. The altmedia is the minor leagues to next years regular media

therefore this years writer on the altmedia minor league will be next years regular media and then a newer group of altmedia will rail about the ex-altmedia who is now regular media

bad example-Tim Russert got famous with his stat dryink board.
Chuck Todd was the old Nate Silver who became NBC/MSNBC star
Now, blooger turned NY Times famer, now Nate Silver is moving up to regular media

Everyone entering Madison Square Garden is frisked, no bias there. 100%.

Do the same until there are machines available to know if there are weapons like guns/bullets/bombs on street corners.

Gun ownership seems to be ...pasty..therefore non threatening.

So, the fun answer is make gun ownership color biased.
Urge every non-christian, non-caucasian, non-male to shop for a gun and at least go as far as forcing a background check.
Urge them to mob gun shows.
Go to NRA meetings and functions, explain the predictions of a race war you keep hearing about are making you nervous and you want to be ready; explain your trying to protect your culture and American dream.
whenever you go wear a pro-union, pro-science, "Die Religion ... ist das Opium des Volkes" K Marx, Chi Guevara, or Mao Tze Tung quote t-shirt.
Enjoy the c chaos
