With full and proper security & cameras- the 3 kidnapped women found yesterday

might have been found on day one
OR
might never have been kidnapped at all if the people who did it knew they would be discovered instantly

Cameras everywhere can go far in stopping abuse of all kind

Maybe Etan Paitz would still be alive today with 2013 security in place then

instead of thinking of negatives all the time, stop and think about the positives.

Maybe Elizabeth Smart would never have gone through the ordeal she went through

etc.

people speak about freedom and freedom taken away, mostly in conceptual thoughts

Then real life sneaks up and smacks us in the face-
freedom. The 3 (now adults) know about REAL freedom lost and now found.

And one shivers in fear that perhaps it wasn't only 3 and there might have been more.

You are quite willing to sacrifice all for your "security"-I am NOT.

My mother was 7 when Hitler "annexed" Austria, Even as a child, she learned fast what it was like to have to watch everything you said or did because the Gestapo was everywhere.

My birthplace would be hard to find
It changed so many times
I'm not sure where it belongs
But they tell me the Baltic coast is full of amber
And the land was green
Before the tanks came
One day I learned just how it used to be
The devils' curse brought the whole world to it's knees
And it was "Hey you, keep your head down
Don't look around, please don't make a sound
If they should find you now
The Man will shoot you down"

It's a mighty long way out of the darkness
To where the sun is free to shine
Oh! The truck came by to put us in the back
And left us where the railroad tracks cross the line
Then the border guide took us by the hand
And led us through the hole into the promise land beyond
And I can hear him now
Whispering soft and low
"When you get to the other side
Just run like hell"

I thought I had a quiet place
Where I could learn how to catch my childhood dreams
But on my left and to my right they keep on shouting
While I'm stuck in between
Lord! I'm tired of running and I don't believe I can
I can hear them calling time and time again
And it's "Hey you, keep your head down
Don't look around, please, don't make a sound
If they should find you now
The Man will shoot you down"

171. Real freedom and real security are indeed intertwined. Giving government the ability to monitor
Wed May 15, 2013, 11:33 AM
May 2013

all of our public activities is not real security. It might occasionally facilitate capture of a criminal after the fact, but never in history has anyone been made safer by being placed under constant surveillance; with the exception of inmates in high-security prisons, of course.

It may give you a false sense of security, but only as long as the government in power is one you find agreeable.

Imagine how history might have played out with President Richard M. Nixon or the elder George Bush given the power and the ability to monitor all conversations that were made over the public telephone network. Or if King George III had somehow been able to broadly eavesdrop on conversations taking place in the American colonies. I'd sooner have given tactical nuclear weapons to General William Tecumseh Sherman.

The Allies NEVER bombed the rail-lines...

During 1983-84 I visited a friend in Switzerland for a few months. One day when we were taking the train from the town of Uster to Zurich (about 20km) when we passed an empty field just before arriving at the Zurich stations. Our Swiss host pointed over to it and said, "That's where the allies bombed once." I asked him to explain further as I understood Switzerland to have been "neutral," and he told me that the allies, by bombing an empty field, were giving them a warning about letting the Nazis move troops by train through Switzerland to Italy, a much more direct route. I don't know if the Swiss heeded the warning, but I thought it odd then that the Germans were able to move its troops without the Allies stopping them.

Three young women who vanished a decade ago near their homes in Cleveland were found only miles from where they disappeared, and three men have been arrested in relation to the incident, according to police.

Gina DeJesus, Amanda Berry and Michele Knight were found alive, and Cleveland Police Commander Keith Sulver said all three women were getting medical treatment but seemed to be in good condition.

"All of them are doing well. They all look good," he said. "They're all talking. They're aware of everything that's going on, and we're just very happy that they're safe and in good condition."

May 2013

It's a still life water color,
Of a now late afternoon,
As the sun shines through the curtained lace
And shadows wash the room.
And we sit and drink our coffee
Couched in our indifference,
Like shells upon the shore
You can hear the ocean roar
In the dangling conversation
And the superficial sighs,
The borders of our lives.

And you read your Emily Dickinson,
And I my Robert Frost,
And we note our place with bookmarkers
That measure what we've lost.
Like a poem poorly written
We are verses out of rhythm,
Couplets out of rhyme,
In syncopated time
Lost in the dangling conversation
And the superficial sighs,
Are the borders of our lives.

Yes, we speak of things that matter,
With words that must be said,
"Can analysis be worthwhile?"
"Is the theater really dead?"
And how the room is softly faded
And I only kiss your shadow,
I cannot feel your hand,
You're a stranger now unto me
Lost in the dangling conversation.
And the superficial sighs,

In the borders of our lives.

Thu May 9, 2013, 07:05 PM
May 2013

Eggs benedict is also great made with slices of smoked salmon in place of the bacon. If you are in or around New Jersey, try it with Taylor ham.

Add to shopping list
INGREDIENTS
8 pieces of bacon or 4 pieces of Canadian bacon
2 tablespoons chopped parsley, for garnish
4 eggs
2 teaspoons white or rice vinegar
2 English muffins
Butter
Blender Hollandaise

10 Tbsp unsalted butter
3 egg yolks
1 Tbsp lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon salt
Dash of cayenne or tabasco
METHOD
1 Start with the bacon. Heat a large skillet on medium low heat. Add the strips of bacon or the slices of Canadian bacon. Slowly fry, turning occasionally, until the bacon is browned on both sides, and if using strip bacon, much of the fat is rendered out (about 10 minutes). Use tongs or a fork to remove the bacon from the pan, set on a paper towel to absorb the excess fat. Don't pour the bacon fat left in the pan down the drain! Either sop it up with paper towels when it has cooled a bit, or pour it into a jar to be used later (see rendering bacon fat).

2 While the bacon is cooking, bring a large saucepan two-thirds-filled with water to a boil, then add the vinegar. Bring the water to a boil again, then lower the heat to a bare simmer.

3 Make the blender hollandaise. To make blender hollandaise, melt 10 Tbsp unsalted butter. Put 3 egg yolks, a tablespoon of lemon juice, 1/2 teaspoon salt in a blender, blend on medium to medium high speed for 20-30 seconds, until eggs lighten in color. Turn blender down to lowest setting, slowly dribble in the hot melted butter, while continuing to blend. Taste for salt and acidity and add more salt or lemon juice to taste.Transfer it to a container you can use for pouring and set it on a warm – but not hot – place on or near the stovetop.

4 Poach the eggs. Here is an easy method for poaching eggs. Essentially, working one egg at a time you crack an egg into a small bowl and slip it into the barely simmering water. Once it begins to solidify, you can slip in another egg, until you have all four cooking. Turn off the heat, cover the pan, and let sit for 4 minutes. (Remember which egg went in first, you'll want to take it out first.) When it comes time to remove the eggs, gently lift out with a slotted spoon. Note that the timing is a little variable on the eggs, depending on the size of your pan, how much water, how many eggs, and how runny you like them. You might have to experiment a little with your set-up to figure out what you need to do to get the eggs exactly the way you like them.

5 As soon as all the eggs are in the poaching water, begin toasting your English muffins. If you can’t get all the muffins toasted by the time the eggs are ready, gently remove the eggs from the poaching water and set in a bowl.

6 To assemble the eggs benedict, butter one side of an English muffin. Top with two slices of bacon or 1 slice of Canadian bacon. You can trim the bacon to fit the muffin if you’d like. Put a poached egg on top of the bacon, then pour some hollandaise over. Sprinkle some parsley over it all and serve at once.
Yield: Makes 4 one-egg one-muffin servings of eggs benedict.

http://www.standard.co.uk/news/tens-of-thousands-of-cctv-cameras-yet-80-of-crime-unsolved-6684359.html

London has 10,000 crime-fighting CCTV cameras which cost £200 million, figures show today.

But an analysis of the publicly funded spy network, which is owned and controlled by local authorities and Transport for London, has cast doubt on its ability to help solve crime.

A comparison of the number of cameras in each London borough with the proportion of crimes solved there found that police are no more likely to catch offenders in areas with hundreds of cameras than in those with hardly any.

In fact, four out of five of the boroughs with the most cameras have a record of solving crime that is below average.

Is that with hundreds of cameras in any given metro region recording public areas 24 hrs a day - nobody will have the funding or the manpower to ever monitor them. It's only a matter of algorithms which are increasingly sophisticated on nearly a daily basis and computer hardware which is constantly improving and getting cheaper before the capability of tracking everyone in real time solely by camera will be here.

The cameras are already good enough, it's as inevitable as gravity that the software and hardware will improve to make use of the video capacity.

Before the 'bots have the ability to develop those rules themselves. And before some nefarious corporation can either.

If we let the coming surveillance network grow into our society organically rather than planning for it ahead of time, we'll wake up one morning with cameras literally everywhere, with no way of controlling how & when that data is accessed and by whom.

You can cover your ears, stick your head in the sand & and scream "NO! NO! NO!" repeatedly. That won't change the fact that this WILL happen.

102. I have no problem with individuals having security cameras
Tue May 7, 2013, 10:38 AM
May 2013

There was some kid (little girl) that disappeared a few years ago and there was great camera footage of her riding her bike as she left her house. I remember it because the camera footage was very high quality. Similarly some people have security cameras in their house and get great, clear footage of burglars. I'm all for those cameras and what they capture.

I don't want public cameras connected on a real-time network capturing everyone's every move. Too much potential for abuse. Yes, they would be great for back-tracking a known criminal's moves (like the 7/7 bombings in UK) but they could also be abused by abusive authorities. Think someone digging up dirt on an ex-girlfriend/boyfriend or trashing a political/business rival. In our "money/power makes right" society, I think there is too much potential for abuse without adequate consequences for the abusers.

anyone who goes somewhere where there is tv is told before hand that the game will be covered, and if you are with someone you don't want to be seen with, then don't be seen
by the cameras

however, with cameras everywhere one can pinpoint the moment of capture and that is the last known public movement of the person

If it saves one person from being kidnapped, it is well worth ten billion cameras

that's what technology is for.

and if one is not doing anything wrong, having a camera there to prove nothing wrong is done will go far to being found not guilty

I personally would rather be filmed by the government than some weird person with a cell phone. As everyone has cell phones, everyone already is filmed.

Cameras in Dallas and Memphis and a kitchen in Los Angeles might have stopped all those
loony conspiracy theories in the first place.

and all the cameras on 9-11 were able to prove it actually happened, unlike the conspiracy theorists who deny anything happened at all, and think the planes were not there (though they all were plainly seen, and that buildings did not fall and 3000 people died.

If everyone had a camera in Austria, maybe millions of lives could have been saved

of course, those people lost their civil rights

as did 82% of the nation when Jefferson issued his famous all men created equal thingy.

So in a land with slavery and no rights, a camera hardly takes away any right, and in fact,
gives people rights they would have lost with no documentation in it.
