New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is lashing out at a former White House doctor who said she worries about the governor dying in office because he is so heavy.
Former White House physician Connie Mariano made the comment in an interview with CNN. The Scottsdale, Ariz., doctor says she'd like to see Christie run for president in 2016 but that he needs to lose weight. She worries he could have a heart attack or stroke and expressed her concern about the governor "dying in office."
During a visit Wednesday to a shore town devastated by Superstorm Sandy, Christie was asked about the doctor's comments.
Unless Mariano gives him a physical exam and learns his family history, "she should shut up," the Republican governor said.
Christie said his children heard the doctor's comments and his preteen son asked him if he was going to die.
"This is just another hack who wants five minutes on TV," Christie said.
Mariano later defended herself in an interview with Bloomberg, saying that "you don't have to be a doctor to see that he is obese."

You're a hypocrite and a fraud - you're doing it to run in 2016 - you're not fooling anyone.
Let the media give you a pass about doing it for your children. You attacked the doctor and told her she was frightening your children...then you headed for surgery. Fuck you - one more lying ReTHUG scumbag of a hypocrite.

anyone who finally takes control of a health issue that plagues so many people in this country.....it is a good thing....regardless of the reason....your rant is unwarranted....

(102,119 posts)on that score (how personal the battle and his clear understanding of what an intense struggle it is for so many) are the one area in which I find him to be sincere.
I dislike him on the first score, but will defend him on the second.

(102,119 posts)But, as one who is not obese, but has fought tendency toward weight gain my entire life, the way in which the physician engaged in the discussion was problematic, even while she was citing what is undeniably true in terms of long term risk... I can assure you countless progressives/Dems who likewise have fought to lose or maintain their weight have empathy for someone called out in public in that manner, even if they similarly have disdain for the person.
We would, as a party, be wise to keep that in mind. Criticize the individual and his/her policies, beliefs, and actions. Attacking because of factors not wholly, nor perhaps largely, in the person's control is just wrong. Particularly when well over 50% of the population can relate to that person's struggles.

(4,291 posts)BS statement on your part! "Get a life", what the fuck does that mean?
Who paid for his cosmetic surgery?
This is a guy who has had government health care for what, his entire working life and he would deny it to others?
He takes helicopters to his kids baseball games?
He plays tough guy chastising his NJ citizens in public?
He doesn't give a fuck about the many people in this country who suffer from an health related issues, he cares about himself, period.
So chill factor, "get a life" and find a worthwhile cause, maybe over at newslessmax or faux, where your partisan pity will be appreciated.
And, for goodness sake, the rant was perfect!

(620 posts)days ago that 1/3 of the adults in the US are overweight, and no, I do not have a link)
So, when someone takes steps to reverse his/her own obesity issues it is a good thing - regardless of the motivation.

(102,119 posts)The body has a way of compensating for some time before the adverse health changes of obesity catch up... It is quite possible that, for the moment, his lipid profile, EKG, blood sugar and similar indicators of general health might have been within normal ranges.
I cringe too when someone sends the perception that obesity does not put ones' long term health at risk, but this is NOT what we want to go after this man for. There is plenty of ugliness within this man's policies and actions while in office to use against him. Let's be smart (and sensitive to the countless millions of Americans who will find empathy for this situation--and take great personal offense at our attacks).

(102,119 posts)With considerable effort, I find myself on the low end of my life time weight, but it requires more time and effort and extremely careful eating than I could ever have imagined. If I were working two jobs, as many overweight Americans, I can not imagine how I'd find the time to eat (nor be able to afford) healthy non-processed food and get the exercise necessary. I have great empathy for those 65% of Americans.

(25,183 posts)I doubt he'd get even five percent in Iowa. They don't love his kind of smirky gasbag over there, they'd much prefer a fundie. And if he pins his hopes on Florida with all the Northeastern transplants who have moved there, he'll find out what Giulliani did about that strategy.

(25,406 posts)The closest I could find was the following quote:
The next day, he spoke frankly about his efforts to lose weight and described himself as "remarkably healthy," but he also acknowledged his doctor "continues to warn me that my luck is going to run out relatively soon."
I think that this is not an uncommon situation. Someone overweight is healthy right now but concerned that this may change if they don't take some action.
I wish Christie well in his quest for good health.
