(15,859 posts)From the article:
Putin did not say how, but he did announce he had ordered the acceleration of highly advanced Russian weapons supplies to Syria.
Israeli Debkafile's military sources disclosed that the Russian leader was referring to S-300 anti-air systems and the nuclear-capable 9K720 Iskander (NATO named SS-26 Stone) surface missiles, which are precise enough to hit a target within a 5-7 meter radius at a distance of 280 kilometers.
In his phone call to Netanyahu, the Russian leader advised the prime minister to make sure to keep this in mind.
Doesnt sound like he's screwing around.

(10,745 posts)Russia may not like to admit this, but we pretty much top them on everything these days; their military fell apart in the '90s and they haven't really recovered since(despite the fearmongering of the neo-cons who insist otherwise, just like some insist that China has thousands of nukes instead of just a few hundred).

(15,064 posts)The right wing will not tolerate Putin verbally pushing Israel around. Not that I agree but Netanyahu doesn't give a good shit. Diplomacy is on the back burner when it comes to the chicken hawks getting their proverbial war rocks off.

(10,745 posts)I don't doubt that a regional conflict, like the ones in '73 or '82 is still a possibility, but Russia doesn't have the capability to project worldwide like we do, and besides, I doubt the Russian people would want their leaders to make the mistakes that WE made with Iraq under Bush.

(10,745 posts)Come on, man, even a conflict over North Korea couldn't do that.
And you need to keep in mind that similar conflicts have happened between Israel and Syria....namely, the Yom Kippur War and whatever the one in '82 was called.
Particularly in 1982, nuclear tensions were beginning to run rather high with the Soviets and given that Syria was an unofficial friend of the Communist superpower and that Israel was an official ally of the U.S. & NATO, there was some real potential for a truly global conflict had things gone south(even if not quite all that likely), including the usage of nuclear weapons; this isn't the 1980s and a lot of things have changed, including Russia's relationship with the U.S>
I hate to say this, but all this talk of WWIII every time a small something comes up quite frankly reeks of Alex Jones-esque fearmongering, and quite unfortunate that some progressive institutions are STILL pushing this as well.

(10,745 posts)Russia may be run by incompetent buffoons & crooks, but they're not insane. Even Mitt Romney isn't that crazy(still VERY glad he didn't win, though).....
To start a truly global war in this day and age would very much require levels of insanity rivaling that of Kim Jong-Un.....or perhaps a global conspiracy of some sort, like that ....or maybe both, perhaps. But I doubt either of these
The plausibly possible reprecussions of a regional war gone bad are concerning enough. We don't need any fearmongering about the Next World War when such isn't warranted....because guess what? The MIC feeds off that.....so do the warhawks in Congress.
