Journalist recovers video of his arrest after police deleted itBy Timothy B. Lee | ars technica

The officer who arrested Carlos Miller
<snip>
A Miami journalist has recovered video of police officers arresting him after it was deleted from his camera. The man was covering a police effort to evict Occupy Miami protestors. He plans to file a complaint with the police department and with the United States Department of Justice.
On January 31, Miami police evicted Occupy Miami protesters from their downtown campsite. On hand to cover the action was photojournalist Carlos Miller. Along with protestors and other journalists, he was pushed down the street by a line of police in riot gear. He tried to circle around the block to return to his car, but he found his path blocked by a second line of police officers.
The police weren't arresting the other journalists around him, so Miller said he assumed he would be allowed to cross this second line of officers to return to his car. But when he approached one of the officers, he was stopped and placed under arrest. Upon his release the following morning, he found that several videos he had taken, including the one documenting his arrest, had disappeared.
Miller has since recovered some of the missing video, and it appears to back up his story. Though some crucial sequences are missing, the video shows Miller approaching a female police officer, who blocks his path and then calls other officers over to help arrest him.
"You were given a dispersal order, sir, and you were told you were gonna be placed under arrest," she told Miller in the video. "We don't want to have to hurt you," she said.
"I'm not doing anything," Miller responded. "I'm not resisting."

(62,325 posts)they steal his film? That seems to be illegal as it was news coverage, and now evidence in a possible lawsuit or hearing.
I am glad he is filing a complaint.

Why would she make such a statement to a man who has done nothing to deserve being hurt in the first place? She's an out of control brute and needs to be fired.
I had to laugh at how childish those policemen looked when they were getting themselves sorted out.

Carlos is a tireless 1st Amendment crusader and he has the lumps to prove it. He's a hero in my book.

I would guess he also feels personally relevant, and important.
"Ooh, I shot maneuvers, and I was asked to stop! This MATTERS!"
No, it really doesn't matter, in the slightest, to me....
I put action like this in the Ayn Rand wing of the left (and yes, that phrase spins one's head for a reason). They think their individualist action means something, because, well, every person is special, and matters.... in their head.
That makes them troops (if dumb ones), not generals.

(163,986 posts)Second, Carlos has trained a bunch of young photographers how to deal with police harassment.
Then, he was there reporting on OccupyMiami, which the corporate media can't be trusted with.
In fact, Carlos is special and not in his head but out in the street backing up independent journalism where it matters.

(11,138 posts)And that's OK, you don't have to. On the other hand if you are going to go offering up opinions, especially snarky ones, the classy thing to do would be to at least ATTEMPT to be informed on your subject.
Carlos has made a difference, in a particular way and on a particular issue that he cares very much about. It might not seem like much to you, but I am fairly certain he's OK with that too. He isn't trying to impress you, or anyone else as far as I can tell. What he does matters to HIM (and many of us too) and that is what matters.

(46,436 posts)Each and every one of us DOES matter. And I would venture to guess that you know nothing about Carlos Miller or the cause that he so heroically champions. As a photographer myself, I deeply appreciate his passion. Besides being a terrific journalist, he's an exceptional photographer.

You know how the crowd Boos at a football game when some fool takes off his clothes,
and runs naked around the field?
Can you hear the Boos?
From your post #14 this thread:
"They makes them (sic) troops (if dumb ones), not generals."
RagingInMiami's tireless dedication to this cause,
personal sacrifice over the years,
courage in the line of duty,
willingness to Put it ALL On the Line,
and Leadership
does INDEED make him a "General" in this most important of wars for our democracy,
though if you asked him, he would reply he is only doing his duty as a citizen and a photographer.
(I am familiar enough with his work over the years to make this claim).
OTOH, the ignorance on display in your post DOES put YOU in one of the categories you mention,
and that category is NOT the one RagingInMiami stands in.
RagingInMiami is one of the best DU has ever had among our ranks.
He Walks the Walk.
You still have time to post a retraction and a Mea Culpa,
and walk away with some of your integrity intact.
You will know them by their WORKS,
not by their excuses.

For me, winning the contest is about further establishing my blog as a legitimate source of information about police abuses. It's about making more people aware of these incidents that occur on a daily basis.
It's about sending a message to police and judges that people are paying attention

(2,859 posts)in the 80's, we always took off our chest candy and anything else someone could grab. It isn't smart
to wear that stuff. No one is impressed with the ribbons etc when the shit hits the fan, and most don't know
what it means and don't care. Also they shouldn't care, ribbons are for past performance not present.
The only medals I care about are personnel awards such as the MOH, Sliver Star, Bronze Star etc. IMHOP.
