ex- polygamist sect boys learn that women dont exist to serve males

After fleeing polygamist sect, boys face a new world

ach Bowers' cultural education included a battle of wills over a simple task: how to mop the kitchen floor.

Just when the teenager thought he was done with the weekly chore, Debbie Hofhines would loom like a drill sergeant, demanding to know whether he'd used enough cleaner. In response, Zach grumbled, slammed drawers and disappeared with friends.

"At first, she was so aggressive she scared me," he said. "She'd say, 'I want this done and I want it done now.' I'd never seen anything like it. I was like, 'Whoa.'"

This was no typical parent-teen faceoff. Zach, who grew up in a polygamist compound, had always been taught that women served men. Debbie, 51, a veteran foster parent, was determined to show him housework was not just women's work.

"This is my house," he says Debbie told him. "And nobody tells me what to do here."

It took months for Zach to accept that women can be strong and assertive — one of many lessons he would learn about life in the outside world. Now 18, Zach is a defector from the secretive Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, a breakaway sect of the Mormon Church that practices polygamy, dictates almost all aspects of people's lives and casts women into subservience.

I hate these American Cults "Freedom of Religion" in this country has been interpreted as "freedom to abuse and harm". The existence of this hideous cult leaves me with little respect for our whole system.

I am sure the young men are told to avoid girls like snakes so the older guys can pick the ones they want to rape into being their 6th or 7th wife. Natural inclinations of the young always get into God's way for these despicable men.

The Lost Boys are a danger to the cult because they might actually like and attract girls that the elders there consider their own. The young men and boys have no place, so they are shoved out.

and the families who take them in.

Rotten tomatoes for the FLDS, but also for any who seek by home-schooling, isolation or other means to control our youth. In this situtaion more information--about the world, other people, other beliefs, whatever--more is better.

These fundies skirt US laws while bleeding the government. They keep the females and toss out the boys for others to rehab and care for. Thanks be that there are people to do the care and teaching, but it would be so much better if it weren't needed.

... and also a whole bunch of similar statements in the Holy Books of the God(s) of Abraham.

Christianity, Islam, Judaism all denigrate women and relegate them to a position far below that of men - just ask the Pope what he thinks about women!

So, I guess Debbie is gonna go to Hell for having dared to teach and to discipline a male (Leastways, that's what the Holy Books say - and we KNOW they are the clear and infallible Holy Word of God). Perhaps Zach will be able to reach out to her, and to teach her her proper place in the world - so that her soul may go to Heaven. Let us pray that God gives him this strength to save her from herself.

Religion: A recurrent mental disorder, afflicting most of humanity.
