Group of Vt. lawmakers wants U.S. Constitution changed

tate Sen. Ginny Lyons, D-Chittenden County, is one of several Vermont lawmakers who plan to demand the United States Congress hold a national convention to create an opportunity to change the U.S. Constitution.

"Our representative democracy is broken," Lyons warned.

Lyons and her colleagues in this request object to the 2010 Supreme Court ruling in the Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission case. That decision said the government cannot restrict spending on politics by corporations, labor unions or other groups, basically saying they have free speech rights like anyone else.

Sen. Anthony Pollina, P-Washington County, Vt., joined Lyons in calling for a convention. "Some people would say talking about constitutional amendments and conventions is a radical thing to do," Pollina told reporters Thursday. "Citizen's United is a very radical thing to do. And it really undermines the very fabric of our democracy by telling citizens they don't count as much as dollars count."

btw, the party identified by the "P" after Senator Pollina's name, stands for Progressive. Vermont has an active 3rd party, the Vermont Progressive Party with members in both the VT House and Senate.
