Critics slam Calif. GOPer Maldonado's latest move as a 'Willie Horton' misstep

The 2014 governor’s race isn’t even officially kicked off, and Republican former Lt. Gov. Abel Maldonado has kicked up a storm of controversy, thanks to a press conference that’s already being slammed as his “Willie Horton” moment.

Maldonado, who has indicated he is seriously eying a challenge to incumbent governor Jerry Brown, went to a Capitol garage yesterday to unveil a campaign slamming the Democrat, and to announce he’s filed papers in support of a ballot measure to repeal the governor’s prison realignment.

But the event became the focus of intense criticism after Maldonado cited Jerome Rogers, 57, an African-American transient who has been charged with murdering a San Bernardino County woman, as a prime example of how Brown’s moves have endangered public safety.

... And there was another problem for Maldonado, as reported by the LA Times: “Rogers was never part of the governor’s shift of state felons to county control.”
