Kelly O'Donnell said on Morning Joe just now that when she was covering the Sanford race in South Carolina, people were coming up to her demanding to know why the media wasn't covering Benghazi.
No wonder Colbert Busch lost that race. Sounds to me like repukes in that district are DERANGED...

(63,912 posts)Elijah Cummings was so good in that segment! He was very, very clear about how the repubs on that committee were trying to put "words in the mouth" of that foreign service officer...he referred to the sworn testimony of that officer several times in rebuttal of the picture the republicans were painting.

(90,061 posts)But that was my original subject. The Pubbies are in a corner and have nowhere to go nationally, History is in the process of dumping them in the ashbin. So of course they will say anything.
I expect a new "progressive" Republican Party to rise and give the Blue Dogs competition from the left eventually, there is no place else for them to go.
All I will say about theory is that theories are a dime-a-dozen, very easy to come up with, but on the other hand, theories that you can support, "prove" and rely on to get around in life, those are hard to come by and worth a lot.

(20,317 posts)Do you know what I mean?
They begin with a very extreme interpretation of one, usually completely benign, piece of information. On that, they build an elaborate story. Then they build a new elaborate story on top of that one. And so on, and so on.
It always reminds me of the ramshackle housing you see in some very poor parts of the world, where a makeshift shack ends up forming the wall and part of a floor for several other makeshift shacks that look like they're all going to collapse at any moment. The difference is that, with arguments, all the added garbage only seems to reinforce the whole thing.

(26,060 posts)our hands about? This isn't the first embassy attack and it wont be the last. Funny how it wasn't until there was a Democrat in the White House that this became a huge scandal. Nobody is saying losing 4 American lives overseas is not a big deal, they're saying the pubs are pretending to give a shit about dead Americans only to hurt the President and former Sec of State.

(37,161 posts)...as we look at the big cloud the Republicans are pointing to while saying "where there's smoke...", and never take a sniff to notice that it doesn't smell like smoke.
In fact it looks and smells suspiciously like the fogbanks of steam rising off mountains of elephant shit that Republicans also pointed to and said "where there's smoke..." back during the Clinton administration.

(27,787 posts)4 Americans were killed, and the details around that are now pretty well understood.
The GOP is not trying to figure out how a situation like that in Bengazhi could be prevented. Their hearings are not about improving security. Its not about how such security is funded (funding they voted to cut btw).
They are complaining about one set of media talking points, in which Susan Rice indicated that the information they had was incomplete.
What the GOP is proving is that dead Americans, after 9/11/2001, or after Benghazi, are nothing more than political props to them.
They are uninterested in what actually happened, and totally focused on trying to find any form of political gain from any aspect of the deaths. And they are willing to hold an endless series of investigations to that end.
This is not surprising. They don't intend on governing. They are never interested in that.
They will probably hunt until they find that some one got a BJ somewhere in Bengahzi.

Maybe as a PR matter it would have been better had the official response been clearer, but there certainly WAS a "fog of war" argument to be made.

(26,648 posts)except the ones Republicans pulled out of their ass, or Alex Jones' ass, like the question about Turkey.
Unlike the previous administration who took no responsiblity for their negligence resulting in 9/11 and all other foreign policy disasters that followed, this one was up front and took the blame. Those who want to follow the idiocy on Fox or crazy conspiracy crap won't believe anything except what they want based on no facts at all.

(19,877 posts)Hilarious the conservative argument has went from a nefarious cover-up of dead diplomat's while Obama watched in real-time and purposely let people die while laughing like Satan to the State Dept. revised its story as facts became more clear. Ooookay. Maybe conservatives over-reacted just a bit?

(7,403 posts)Libyan forces killed nearly 100 of the terrorists so that severely disrupted their ability to strike again as the mole got whacked hard. Also, the Ambassador was dead within 20 minutes of the start of the attack so it is doubtful that even if America had a flat-top full of helicopters in international waters off of Tripoli that they could have saved American lives. (Tripoli is where our Embassy is located). About the only question I can think of is whether we should have opened the Consulate office in Benghazi that soon after Kaddafi was deposed. The CIA had no warning of a potential attack at this location and you can't cover all of the "what if" possibilities.

(3,891 posts)All we are saying is that it happened a long time ago, that's all that Jay Carney said two days ago during the briefing.
The only people talking about it are MSNBC, which has the lowest viewership of the cable news, and is much less viewed than the broadcast news. When asked about Benghazi, why isn't Carney telling the story, over and over again, every day if that is what it takes? Instead we say it's Republican BS, but we don't explain why it's Republican BS where the press, and the people, can see it.
It was covered. Once, perhaps. Then on page 17 of the NY Times, or even farther back.
Carney should be shouting it from the rooftops every time someone mentions it. He should call on people just so he can get the message out.
The mistake? (I know it wasn't your reply but I'm not going to type long replies to everyone who demanded information while ignore the less intelligent who think I am an Alex Jones follower) The mistake was when in the first few days we said it was because of a video. That was the mistake. Yes, we acknowledged that mistake. Again, Carney should say whenever this is brought up the same information time and time again. When our side asks questions at the hearings, we should highlight that information, we made a mistake, and we acknowledged it on this date, and wouldn't you agree that if there is anything to learn it's about cutting funding for embassy security?
We aren't. We just say there is nothing here, time to move on. So the Meme get's going, and the people believe it is a cover up. Convincing those of us here isn't hard. We want to believe our leadership. The people out there are wondering, and all of those wondering are not RW racist homophobic hate filled folks. They are people who voted for us in the past, and if we want them to support us in the future, we have to work for it, and earn it.

(7,403 posts)See post #44. The confusion could well have been a tactical part of the attack. When there is confusion it is best not to jump to conclusions and take the time necessary to sort it all out. That looks to be what happened here. Everybody was in agreement that it was an act of terrorism -- Romney learned a hard lesson on that in the 2nd debate. But it had to be sorted out whether it was an al Qaeda affiliated group or some old Kaddafi loyalists and also to reconcile some statements on the ground that it was the video when that turned out to just be a smoke screen.
Security was inadequate and that needs to be fixed.

(15,953 posts)They should be covering how the GOP cut the requested funding for security.
They should be covering the previous lack of outrage by Republicans & Fox News for Embassy attacks during the Bush administration.
They should be covering the story of how FOX whips up hysteria and tries to create a story all out of proportion with nothing more than innuendo and over dramatization.
They should be covering the story of how the Republican Congress has already held 10 hearings on Benghazi and still has produced little if any useful information meanwhile using the opportunity to make false claims and repeat wild accusations.
They should be covering the collusion between the FOX Network and the GOP and how they have used this formula on not just this story but story after story for years.

(15,438 posts)Also, the Democrats should be pointing this out. It would show just how petty and partisan the Republicans have become, and how they're trying to use everything they can to undermine this administration and a potential Hillary run.
This is why, when anyone says that President Obama should use the "bully pulpit" to do anything, I keep telling them, there's no such thing as a bully pulpit anymore. It's all corporate media all of the time, and corporate media prefer Republicans. That's why they can get away with a lot of shit and never be called to task.

(25,551 posts)Us Dems on the intertube are pointing it out, but we need some Dems with more visibility, like those in congress. Yes, the media seems to favor the Rs, but I don't get the impression that Dems in congress are making a stink. Even if the corporate media shuts them out, they could still put it on their websites.
Maybe a congress critter's webpage could say something like this:
I am congress critter XYZ and I am proud of our foreign policy under Obama. We ended the war in Iraq. We are ending the war in Afghanistan. We caught OBL. We are not rushing into war with Syria. We are not lying about WMD as the Bush administration did. This led to the loss of over 3,000 lives. The Republicans have one goal in mind: They want more wars. They truly believe that Americans should fore-go vital domestic programs and pursue needless wars instead. They want your sons and daughters to die for them. And that is why they are pushing Benghazi. They want to create the impression that Democrats are soft on defense and terrorism. They want us to go to war with Iran and Syria............ (Yeah it sounds kinda silly the way I wrote it, but with enough editing it could be something coherent)
Note: I personally think the Benghazi witch hunt is also about their war mongering. If they get rid of Dem, suppress Dems, make Dems appear soft on defense or put pressure on Dems then they get to have more wars!!
