Daniel Snyder says Redskins will never change name

Daniel Snyder is owner of the Washington pro football team he grew up adoring. Would he ever consider changing the team name that many American Indians and others believe is a racial slur?

"We will never change the name of the team," Snyder told USA TODAY Sports this week. "As a lifelong Redskins fan, and I think that the Redskins fans understand the great tradition and what it's all about and what it means, so we feel pretty fortunate to be just working on next season." What if his football team loses an ongoing federal trademark lawsuit? Would he consider changing it then?

"We'll never change the name," he said. "It's that simple. NEVER — you can use caps."

Snyder does not often speak to the media about the case. He talked to USA TODAY Sports very briefly about it Tuesday afternoon, following a longer interview with him and his wife Tanya about her selection as mother of the year by the American Cancer Society.
Later Thursday, USA TODAY Sports will publish a story about Amanda Blackhorse, who is Navajo and the named plaintiff in the trademark suit. She said if she ever had the chance, she'd ask Snyder if he would dare to call her a redskin to her face.

"I think the best way is to just not comment on that type of stuff," Snyder said. "I don't know her."

Having lived in the DC area my whole life, it's pretty apparent from what I can tell that most fans want the name to stay. True, alot of fans don't like Dan Snyder. Alot of us miss Jack Kent Cook. He was a character.

I'm both a Ravens and a Redskins fan. If the name was changed to the Warriors I would be OK with that. But I'v grwon up with the Redskins name and it would be a change that would be hard to get used to. Some DC council woman wanted to change it to the Redtails which I think is dumb and the DC govt doesn't have any say anyway. FedEx field is in Maryland and the Redskins office and training facilities are in VA.

The biggest news for the "Skins" is hoping RG3 will be healthy enough to play next season. It's pretty apparent, the name won't change.

I switched over to the Ravens years ago, you gotta love an NFL Team named for a Poem, are successful and hail from the great city of Bawlmer. I like the O's too, I only root against them when they play the Nats......

Some years ago, the NBA team here were the Bullets, even longer ago than that, they were the Baltimore Bullets - nicely alliterative. They were changed to the Wizards in response to Gun Violence.......and I guess to be alliterative too.....

There is a long list of reasons why folks detest Little Danny Snyder, not all of them NFL related.
