Kitten Sam Day 4 Update - with Photos of Her and Ashley Playing

He's very gentle with her...and even after he wins, she comes back for more. Then he usually gives her a good cleaning with his tongue. Last night I decided he was tiring her out, so I put her in her bathroom apartment and he slept outside her door all night.

Eyes are very good, lots of energy and a good appetite. The only thing that concerned me was her breathing was a little wheezy at times. Because of the infection, she may have that sound off and on throughout her life. It was only that one time, and when she was sleeping with me.

Please keep up the good thoughts. Thanks!

14. Try mixing some L-Lysine in with the food
Fri May 10, 2013, 01:47 PM
May 2013

It's good for respiratory support and avoiding upper resp. infections. For an adult cat, the suggested dose would be 500 mg per day when having a URI and then 250 mg a day for maintenance. Not sure about a kitten. Can you weigh her somehow? Maybe weigh a box/bed and then leave it on the scale and weigh again with her in it. Figuring the adult doses are for a cat that's 10-15 lb.

What I do for my two rescue fur-babies is keep a bottle with 500-mg capsules here. Open the capsule and then try to split it between the two them, mixed in with their canned food.

Do some research on feline herpes. One of the effects is recurrent URIs. One of our two had a URI when we first got her and so we started them both on L-Lysine. She turned out to be allergic to fish (!!) and the other seems to have hayfever flareups around the same time my boyfriend does, so we've kept them on L-Lysine.

Sam and Ashley are so cute together!!

EDIT: Steam from hot shower running for about 5-10 minutes at a time might help her breathing a bit, too, if she's wheezing.

I took her in to the vet's Monday when I found her because of her eyes...it was obvious respirtaory because they were shut from all the goo...she's on antibiotics and her eye have been clear since Wednesday and during the whole time she always had a good appetite...I think I'll try that with the shower this evening...

64. One positive: if she's used to being medicated as kitten
Fri May 10, 2013, 07:19 PM
May 2013

She will be easy to medicate all her life.

My David was a rescue from one of those horrible hazmat suit places. He was traumatized, ill, and batshit crazy. I would have to chase him thru the apt. 8 times before he would collapse and scream "Don't kill me!" and let me pick him up to squeeze goo into his eyes. Every time. But it made him easy to medicate for the rest of his life.

My kitty Samantha (good name!) was given to us when she was a tiny one also, and she "latched on" quite literally to her "big brother" Dylan--she would try to nurse from him. He was fine with it and would groom her. Vet said that was common with very young kittens.

Back when I took in foster kittens, he would mother the heck out of them (watching over them and grooming them and snuggling them) and they would try to nurse from him.

I love him so much.

Sam is a cutie and I am happy to hear she is doing so well.

We had a male cat who bonded with a tiny female stray that showed up on our back doorstep. Rocky groomed her and slept next to her until he passed on. Nobody can tell me that Peanut didn't mourn his passing. She was in a funk for about two weeks.

My ex-wife and I rescued a 10 week old black cat from a parking lot one cold October night a few years ago. We tried our best to find the owner but ended up keeping the skinny little guy. Having been dog people all our lives we were hesitant to keep a cat. But Onyx changed our entire attitude about cats. He was just an awesome pet. Unfortunately he only lived 3 years before he had some bladder issues and had to be put to sleep. But he forever changed the two of us and once my wife and I decided to end our relationship I went to the local humane society and didn't choose a dog... but allowed a cat to choose me and now I have a wonderful companion as I start the last third of my life single again.

It looks as though you will have a very appreciative pet with Sam.

Hugs are always welcome! It has been a very difficult transition for me the last couple of years. However, I am still here. Still trying to learn and grow...

My shelter cat has been a wonderful companion. He very loving and gives me hugs everyday.

Well he always said he would play until he did not enjoy it anymore. He certainly has nothing to prove and he has such a lovely family to go home to. I choose to think he cares but it is not what it once meant to him. Still it sucks. I do not want him to retire. I will be bereft and the who am I going to want to watch?

Sorry for the thread jack but thanks for this info. I simply have not watched a thing since the Aussie Open.

Both of them. I love it when kittens are in the house. They provide you with hours of entertainment. All mine have grown up (all 6 of 'em) and they're all spayed/neutered. I ALMOST brought home a stray kitten last week (about 6 months old) but my husband would have been most displeased with me if I brought home another one.

Living wild in her back yard. I saw one dead kitten in the middle of the yard and another close to our shared wall. I reached over the wall and scooped it up with my pool pole and it was in similar condition to yours with eye and respiratory infections. I took it to the vet but he wasn't able to save it. I called a local cat rescue group and they came and got all the cats and kittens, I kept one of its sisters. Best of luck to you and your little kitty.
