Community vigil organized to help remember David Silva
Family, friends and community members gathered tonight for a candlelight vigil to remember a father of four who lost his life after a struggle with nine law enforcement officers.
Family and friends, and even community members are paying tribute to this man described as a caring son, a protective brother and a loving father.
"I can't believe my son is gone," said Sal Silva, father of the victim who says he’s still in shock over his son’s tragic death.
"It doesn't make any sense to me that it takes eight people to subdue a guy that's passed out," he said.
Silva wants to know why his son, David who appeared to be drunk and passed out on the corner of Palm Drive and Flower Street was allegedly beaten to death by Kern County Sheriff's deputies.
"I hope the officers that were involved in this realize that he was a man that had a family that loved him. He had four beautiful kids. You know what it's not even about him. This could happen to anybody, somebody else's son," said Silva.
Loved ones placed flowers and pictures in the very spot David Silva lost his life.
"I'm not here to make accusations. I'm not here to make anyone feel bad. I'm not here to do anything negative. I'm sure here to say my brother meant something to me and he meant a lot to a lot of people," said Chris Silva, brother of victim.
Chris Silva says the community vigil is a way for those who knew him to honor his memory.
“Throughout my life, he's always had a hand in who I am," he said.
The vigil is also a time for a brother to show the world just how much he meant.
"One of my biggest regrets in his entire life and in this entire situation is not telling him that I love him and this is what this is for, my ability to say I love you David. I love you more than anything in this life," he said.
