Relatives, friends baffled by O.C. woman's disappearance

Army veteran Maribel Ramos, 36, failed to show up for a speaking engagement and a long-standing softball commitment. That's not like her, but police have found no signs of foul play.

Dependable and steady, Maribel Ramos was a hard-charging Army veteran just a couple of weeks away from graduating from college with a degree in criminal justice.

Beyond all else, friends agree, she was not the kind of person who'd simply walk away.

But Ramos, 36, has been missing for 11 days, seen last on surveillance footage turning in her rent check at her apartment complex in Orange on May 2.

She was reported missing the next day, a Friday, after she failed to show up for a speaking commitment at a veterans group event and then never showed at the softball game she'd played weekly for almost six years.

"There's no question there's something going on here," Gonzalez said. "My sister's missing. I know that it's not because she wants to be missing."

Gonzalez said her sister was not depressed and did not suffer from a mental illness. She did recall a Disneyland trip where the fireworks threw her sister off into a "whole other mode."

"She has things that trigger certain things but not to the point of depression and her leaving and just wandering off or harming herself or thinking of harming herself."

Ramos is dating a man who was at the baseball game Friday, Gonzalez said.

I think that even if she did have something like PTSD that the timing is very strange.

Friends and family members gathered Monday night at a vigil for a missing Cal State Fullerton student, who disappeared on May 2.

------

Ramos has lived in Orange for two years with her roommate.

The roommate told Ramos’ sister that when he left the apartment on May 2, she was there. When he returned home, she was gone.

In the video with the story, her roommate says she had met her boyfriend on the internet and had just recently dumped him.

What a lovely soul, an accomplished and forward thinking individual. It's been a week now and there is too much evil going on in this world.

...I think they definitely need to be looking at people she knows because I find it hard to believe it could have been random given she wasn't logically an "easy" target like a child.
