My older cousin who is more like a brother to me, was just knocked over by one of his cows on the farm. He hit his really hard on concrete. Doesn't seem to know his name, who the President is, or what day it is. Seems like our whole family is under some sort of little black cloud right now, had another female cousin in the hospital last week.
They are taking him to Strong Hospital in Rochester. Please send him good vibes that he comes out of this okay. I love him so much.

His sister just texted us. She used to be an EMT and knows the ones transporting him to the hospital. One of them just texted her and said her brother's doing a little better. He just remembered his social security number so the EMT said that is a really good and hopeful sign.

(2,805 posts)My brother was in a car accident years ago where he had a severe concussion. He lost a lot of his memory of the past. He was unconscious (awake but not really processing what was going on) for 6 weeks. Then he just picked up where his memories left off and is doing well.
If your cousin is remembering his SSN so soon, I think he will be fine. He may not remember the actual accident but everything else seems to be coming back. I'm sending him good thoughts for continued healing!

(7,549 posts)when Poppa Bush was President.
First the doctor asked her what day it was, and she said "I don't know but then I usually don't anyway."
Then he asked her who was President and she said "That asshole Bush", then she slapped her hand over her mouth and said oops I shouldn't have said it that way. The doctor just laughed and said "I think your brain is working just fine."
Thank you and keep safe around your mare!

(68,422 posts)I have known people who, after a stroke that left them in a coma or otherwise virtually nonresponsive ended up being fine. If the damage is not massive, the brain can often reroute functions.
In 2003, after a hip replacement operation, my brother went into a deep coma when several small fat globuli ended up in his thalamus following the operation. Since the thalamus is part of the reticular activating system, when it doesn't work, the person cannot become conscious. The doctors were quite sure he would never wake up again.
But he did a few weeks later, and after a few months of rehab, learning to be upright, to feed himself, to live on his own, etc., he was fine. He still is fine.
For a while, we thought he would never wake up again. Then we were afraid he would not be able to function on his own again. Now, you would never know that he once suffered a catastrophic stroke!
I will keep my fingers crossed for your dear friend!

He doesn't know what happened to him,and he keeps asking and saying the same thing over and over. He even told a joke but now he keeps repeating that too.
The doctors said he had a severe concussion, and they are going to keep in hospital for at least another 24 hours but they think he will recover.
Thank you all so much for the thoughts, prayer, and good vibes. I don't know what I would do without this place.

(7,549 posts)Farm work can be a scary business.
Yo_Mama
(8,303 posts)I come from a farming area, and the number of missing fingers alone is impressive.
My favorite farming story ever was of this 81 year old who fell off a hayrick. Well he got back on and kept working. Almost a year later, he came to the doctor's office because he still couldn't straighten his head. Alarmed and impressed, the doc sent him for neck Xrays.Sure enough, broken neck. He was then 82, and he had to have surgery to fix it. The surgery was successful. He's 86 and still farming, but he can hold his head straight now.
Yes, you want him in the hospital. I know no one likes to be there, but there are times. ... There aren't enough nurses to pick it up quickly enough if he has further developments. Give the wife some relief so she can sleep without worry.
REALLY glad it's looking so positive. If he recovers fully, the teasing next Thanksgiving should be particularly enjoyable!!

(7,549 posts)That did help me understand much better. They released him today. They said last night he just kept asking what happened to him over and over, and is still somewhat confused about that today. Other than that he seems to be doing well and the doctor's released him today.
We are very lucky to have Strong so close. My local hospital just recently became an affiliate of it as well.

and this is why farming is one of the most dangerous occupations.
Farmers have my thanks and admiration.
Thanks for the update. I hope he's back on his feet in no time.
Liberalynn
(7,549 posts)He worked the farm with his Dad, and now he is working it with his son. They are still a small independent farm. It's just the two of them.
Our grandfather was a farmer too and my Mom said they always had a lot of injuries in the family. She was riding on the hay wagon when one of my Uncle's took the corner too fast and it tipped and she got buried underneath the hay.
She said she was terrified and trying to claw her way out while my Uncle was screaming her name and digging for her.
She was always worried about my cousin and his son too, because she knew from experience how dangerous it was. I am just glad he is going to be okay.
Thanks again!

(14,779 posts)I had on a helmet and just riding a 80cc Scooter, but somehow I hit the ground hard and ended up in the Hospital. My sister told me that when I was in the Hospital I kept telling her to call my office to tell them I was in the Hospital. She later told me she told me it was Saturday and my office was closed. I told her, my office had Saturday office and to call them (I have NOT worked in an office with Saturday Hours in over 25 years). She told me, she had called my office and that calmed me down.
I have NO memory of the above at all. The accident was on a Friday night and I do NOT remember the Accident (Through I do remember saying I was going to the store on my scooter before the accident). I have no memory of the incident till Monday when the Hospital finally released me. What I remember is being RELEASED not the days or nights I was in the Hospital.
I suspect my scooter slipped on the Streetcar Tracks that are on the road where I had the accident. I do NOT remember the accident so that is only a guess.
One last comment, I stayed home with my mother for the next week and then decided the next weekend I was going to my office (I was visiting my Mother in Pittsburgh, I live in Johnstown, 80 miles away). I thought I was up to the ride (my brother had picked up my scooter, it still ran needing only some cosmetic repairs). I made the trip, no problem, but as my head cleared over the next few weeks I slowly realized how stupid I had been. My head was NOT Clear enough to do that ride when I did it and I should have stayed at my mother's at least another week. I suggest you do the same with your Cousin, do NOT leave him alone, do NOT leave him resume his farm duties for at least two weeks after the accident. My head was not completely clear for at least a month after my accident, and neither will his.
On the other hand, he will think he can what he did before. He needs to be off the job for at least a month. Some light work could help him, but he has to leave the cows to others for at least a month. I know he will NOT want to, I have dealt with farmers and their need to do something, but he has to do it with other people present not by himself and it would be better if he helps someone else then people to help him. Just my personal opinion based on my own experience.
I pray he recovers and no permanent damage occurred, but even if he fully recovers, and is released from the Hospital, he will still be "sick" and it will take at least a month for him to be close to being 100% what he had been.
Liberalynn
(7,549 posts)I am so glad you recovered too from your accident.
That has to be frightening when you can't remember what happened, but probably remembering would be frightening as well.
That's a good point about him not going back to work too soon. You are right he is going to want to because he is very stubborn that way. It's just he and his son running the farm but they are good friends with a number of their neighbors, also farmers who will offer to help, and we've offered to help in what ever way we can until he is better.
He really loves his wife and she can often break through his stubborn when no one else can, so hopefully he will listen to her now.

My prayers are with you as well; I am a nurse and must tell you that head injuries take a very long time to heal. Be patient.

(7,549 posts)They released him today but I know it will be ahwile before he is fully recovered. His son, who is in his late twenties, is still a wreck because he saw it happen and couldn't stop it, because he wasn't close enough.
We just keep telling him you got your Dad help as fast as you could, that's all any of us could have done. He called 911 and then called his Aunt who is a retired EMT who lives right next door.
I think the rest of us need to be there for their whole family.

(19,288 posts)A hard knock to the ol' bean is very serious. It must be frightening to be so disoriented. I've had the kind of concussion that dialates one pupil, gives a tremendous headache, and makes one vomit, but I never had amnesia.
Hope he makes a full recovery.
Liberalynn
(7,549 posts)You are right it has to be very frightening to be disoriented and have amnesia. I have never hit my head that hard before. I had one life threatening incident when the Niacin my doctor had told me to take to lower my cholesterol, (and failed to tell me also lowers blood pressure) interacted with my blood pressure medicine, and caused my BP to drop way too low. I lost conciousness, and according to the EMT that came to my aid, actually stopped breathing, and had no pulse for a couple of minutes. When they got me back, I remembered everything right up to passing out.

(10,348 posts)And takes it easy - Concussions are no joke, and a 2nd one before the 1st one heals can screw you up BAD. I know of a Pro Mod racer (Al Billes) who sustained 2 head injuries, about 2 weeks apart - he's a mechanical engineer, and could not count change after the 2nd wreck - a couple years later, he describes his mental state as "about 40%"
