Germany has canceled plans to buy and modify US-manufactured Global Hawk surveillance drones for 1 billion euros ($1.3 billion), a defense ministry source said on Tuesday (14.05.2013). Germany had no hope seeing it approved after reported European safety concerns. Some 600 million euros were already spent on a prototype - Germany was expected to pay another 500 million euros for four additional drones.
apparently NATO has been the instigator of the drone buildup:
Q: Germany is usually reluctant to engage militarily abroad - or to even put its badge on military projects. Why was the Euro Hawk so important?
A:Germany committed itself within the framework of the NATO "Ground Surveillance" program to make a relevant amount of surveillance drones available. That's the German contribution.

all in all an interesting read, and nice to know drones are being blocked at least in some places.

The entire contract, if purchased, would be only 1 billion euros, says the aritcle.

This appears to be the German original - it says '600 million Euros'.
