General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsSome people shouldn't own guns or pit bulls.
I think that is pretty evident from arguments made by gun enthusiasts and pit bull enthusiasts.
Both recognize this, yet they don't seem to want to minimize the access to either guns or pit bulls.
So, the question remains, what to do about it?

(27,630 posts)I have met several nice and loving pit bulls who have caring and responsible owners. Unfortunately, pit bull owners TEND TO be irresponsible shitheads at best, and violent and abusive at worst.
I think there needs to be more regulation about pit bulls.

(27,985 posts)The stories we hear about are ALL from homes in which that is true, but the majority are loving, caring and responsible.
I side with the ASPCA on BSL:

(207 posts)who buy the image of being bad ass to have a pit. They don't really give a crap about the dog (or anyone else really, this is just one more expression of their anti-social tendencies) so they abuse and misuse the dog until the poor thing goes nuts.

(27,630 posts)To a lesser extent, rottweilers sometimes end up with dumbasses who want a tough looking animal and have no idea how to raise a dog.
I had a rottweiller when I lived in a low-rent area in the Bay Area, and occasionally we (the dog and I) got really boneheaded reactions. I was a young woman in college, and I couldn't afford a better neighborhood. Anyway, there are some tough-guy morons who probably spend their lives in-and-out of jail, who deliberately choose pit bulls.
My rottweiller pup got bit randomly by an off-leash pit bull in the neighborhood...for no reason. It was a random attack. The dumbass kid who had the dog didn't apologize. He looked like he was a little proud of his pitbull, in fact.
Some other gangsta idiot said to me as we were walking down the street minding our own business "my dog should fight your dog". The last thing I wanted was for my dog to be forced to be "tough" or have to fight.
Some of the children in the neighborhood had learned different cultural values regarding scary looking dogs. One time a little kid threatened my rottweiler with a stick FOR NO REASON. My dog was the sweetest ever, and this kid acted like he wanted to swordfight my dog with a stick. The kids learned that attitude from their idiot parents. Somebody I'm sure will get offended, but I'm going to just come out and say this was a low-rent, predominantly hispanic neighborhood.

(23,867 posts)How can we have a free country, and put limits "arbitrarily".
I think what I'm trying to say is that 99% of the problems we face in the world today stem from parents doing a poor job, no job, or worse, with raising children.
I know this is an extremely touchy subject, one which I think your post begs. The denial is almost as prevalent as the problem itself.

(27,630 posts)People are going to call me heartless, but, I don't feel all that bad for women who have been sterilized without their consent, if they already have 5 children.
And some people shouldn't have any children at all.
But don't anybody get all excited, because it won't happen anytime soon. Our country is going in the opposite direction.

(27,670 posts)Like we do with cars.
Then legislate mandatory liability insurance for firearms and pit bulls, with $50,000 minimum coverage.
Like we do with cars.
That way, if a firearm owner's licensed firearm kills or injures someone or someone's pet, or a licensed pit bull owner's little angel kills or mangles someone or someone's pet, the victim or their families have a much better chance at being compensated for their losses to some extent.
Fine anyone who possesses an unlicensed firearm or pit bull.
Kind of like we do with cars.
The specter of monthly insurance payments might dissuade many people from owning firearms or pit bulls.
Just a thought.

(39,171 posts)I know because I have it. The reason it is dirt cheap is because it does not cover criminal acts. Divide the number of gun accidents by the number of gun owners and you see why insurance companies don't deem legal gun ownership a high risk issue.
And of course insurance and registration is irrelevant to criminals.

(115,677 posts)small subset. Why not have all dogs registered/licensed? Or dogs of a certain size? If you are going to say "all guns" then at least be consistent with "all dogs".

(36,221 posts)Many democrats don't believe in banishing every gun from every single gun owners hands.
there are pistols, assault rifles, automatics, each have their own category....
No one is talking about not allowing anyone to a dog.
The comparison is apt.

(12,151 posts)Guns are weapons. Dogs are animals. We have a greater societal right and need to regulate how and which people keep machines made for killing than we do a large terriers.
Not exactly a conundrum.

I do have a black belt in karate though.
