HUNTER WALKER MAY 21, 2013, 11:08 AM
After the December killings in Newtown, Conn., the National Rifle Associations chief lambasted the the evils of violent movies and video games, saying they, rather than guns, were a source of the nations woes.
Now, less than six months later, the NRAs flagship publication, American Rifleman, is celebrating cinematic savagery with a list of the top 10 coolest gun movies that unabashedly praises Hollywood depictions of death and crime.
-snip-
In addition to appearing on the American Rifleman website, the coolest gun movies listicle was also shared by the NRAs official Twitter account. TPM called the NRA to ask how celebrating gun movies fit with the groups past comments criticizing Hollywood. No one from the organization responded.
Heres the NRAs full list of gun flicks:
1. Red Dawn
2. The Terminator
3. The Alamo
4. Die Hard
5. The Godfather
6. Zombieland
7. The Matrix
8. The Delta Force
9. The Road Warrior
10. Tremors

(39,154 posts)I don't really see The Godfather, the Road Warrior, or the first Terminator movies as, "gun movies." In a gun movie, the guns are not incidental, but are their own characters. Of these three, that is most true of the Road Warrior with Max's side-by-side and the masked guy's .357 revolver. Even so, they are bit parts.
My picks, in no particular order:
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. (converted SAA)
Sin City (Springfield 1911)
The Shootist (Colt Peacemaker)
Equilibrium (modified Beretta 92)
Dirty Harry (S&W m. 29)
The Wild Bunch (1911)
Enemy at the Gates (Mauser, Nagant)
Aliens (imaginary rifle)
The Matrix (misc.)
The Unforgiven (Schofield revolver, side-by-side)

(12,723 posts)Including a few genuinely great films. Eastwood's two westerns on the list for example.

(39,154 posts)The first film also suffers by association with the two weird sequels.
Of the gun-as-a-character films, The Matrix is the least feasible because there are so many guns that it is hard to see any one or few as their own characters. How about we replace it with Glory: Colt SAA, 1861 Springfields. Alternatively, we could add another Eastwood entry with A Fist Full of Dollars: '73 Winchester, Colt Peacemaker.

(12,723 posts)But good fun all around.
Even though I have seen around five thousand films I only got around to Josey Wales late last year. Loved Chief Dan George and the entire film.
I used to not care for westerns what with identifying with the indians more than the cowboys but Leone's films are so much better than that.
Deep13
(39,154 posts)Yeah, I guess that's true about Drifter.
Leone's movies are set in Mexico and are about Europeans (Spanish or Anglo) being bastards to each other. I don't like Westerns that portray whites as civilized and progressive against cruel or at best clueless Indians. It's not that Indians could not be cruel, but like all humans it is only part of their personalities and usually not the greatest part. Westerns that had prominent Indian roles that I liked were Dances with Wolves, Little Big Man, and movies that portray Indians as very human neighbors to settlers--like Josey Wales. ("There is iron in your words." Movies with Indians I hated include The Seekers with John Wayne playing a very racist "rescuer" of a female relative who was captured and decided to stay with the Indians. Another eminently forgettable film was Legend of the Lone Ranger with Jason Robards as Pres. Grant, the guy who played Iggy on Taxi as the bad guy, and some obviously white guy as Tonto. The film was just bad, but the Tonto as noble savage made it even worse. I hope Johnny Depp does a better job.
CBGLuthier
(12,723 posts)beautiful films marred by racism.
The Legend of the Lone Ranger may be one of the worst films ever made. Klinton Spilsbury was not any kind of actor at all.
I agree with you about the films you mention. Particularly fond of Little Big Man as I imagine anyone who has seen it would be.
Deep13
(39,154 posts)It shows a white man who at first is horrified by the apparent cruelty of Indians (the Sioux, I think) but eventually grew to respect them and become a valued member of their group.

The botched bank robbery/shoot out scene is regarded as one of the best, most realistic filmed.

(29,414 posts)As I recall from the director's comments, they left the original echoing sounds of the guns in place because it sounded like it would in a "real" situation. The "looped" sounds (as I recall their terminology) didn't sound right in the final edit.
And if you think about it, look at all of the other Michael Mann movies where guns are prominent, such as "Thief", "Manhunter", "Public Enemies" and they're all pretty realistic in their "gun play".

(66,286 posts)A minor theme of the film was that ammunition was as scarce as gasoline, and conserved much more carefully than fuel. If you watch the film, you'll see profligate use of gas, and careful sparing of firearm ammunition.
Anyway, fuck the NRA and their ghoulish fetishes...
