So, some schools had funding for storm shelters

and others did not.

WHY?

I know all kinds of crazy and nasty shit happens in my state, but Moore, OK being hit ALREADY in 1999 by a devastating storm it just does not make sense to me.

Why do some get it and others don't?

No measures in place to retrofit older schools.

I hope the people of Oklahoma demand these older schools be retrofitted with shelters.

how school funding works. I am childless, although I am a home owner and pay taxes. I agree that ALL schools in tornado prone areas be FORCED to have storm shelters!

and I believe those supposedly "in the know" felt the chance that Moore would be hit by another devastating tornado was 1-2%.

are beating themselves over this decision now?

I know it's easy to lay blame, but once it's already happened you'd think they would do something... anything to keep the kids safe. It's not just tornado's. Oklahoma has lot's of weird weather, hail, heavy thunderstorms, sleet. Etc.

So do we! I am in the process of researching what our county has for storm prep.

we made sure we were prepared. I had snacks, drinks, blankets, pillows, and a mattress for our children in the basement (and yes, we were very fortunate to have a basement). There were many nights where we grabbed the girls out of bed and put them in the basement in the middle of the night to finish sleeping on the mattress.

We lived in Indiana, and I hadn't grown up in the Midwest - growing up on Long Island, I knew hurricanes, but not tornadoes, and frankly, I was terrified of them. The town didn't have any tornado sirens (this was in the day before Doppler radar). Why? Oh, because they "never had a tornado before" and "Lake Michigan protects our town from tornadoes." Yarite. I invested in a weather radio.

My first experience with that radio was August 28, 1990 tornado in Plainfield, Illinois, and hearing the guy from NOAA yelling into the radio for Will County and Plainfield to take cover. That was the tornado where the school officials cleared the high school athletes into a hallway in Plainfield High School, and that's what was left standing.
