Elephant stomps on a poacher who tried to shoot him

A few weeks ago, Noluck Tafuruka was arrested by police in Zimbabwe for possessing a rifle without a license. But he’s doing better than his partner, Solomon Manjoro. The two men allegedly snuck into Zimbabwe’s Charara National Park with the intention of bagging some valuable wild animals.

But one elephant that they tried to take down had had it up to here with poachers — and when you’re an elephant, “up to here” is pretty high. The elephant charged Manjoro and trampled him.

In recent years, poaching of elephants and rhinos in wildlife reserves in Africa has spiked dramatically, fueled largely by demand for their prized tusks and horns. Meanwhile, both conservationists and wildlife officers have struggled to protect these animals from hunters, a daunting task given the vast areas to be protected and the stealthiness of poachers who often enter the parks under cover of darkness.

Given the lack of human protection, the elephants are doing it for themselves.

which, among other things, eliminates experienced outdoors people from the field who could report poachers. Poachers are powerful & well-funded, and they don't want regulated hunters in "their territory" and quite possibly neither do some governments.

That said, good on the elephant.

The reaction from lions to approaching elephants is priceless. They get up and out of the way VERY fast. Think the reaction of your average housecat to a horse.

I also learned the difference between African and Asian elephants. The Asian ones can be tamed and ridden. The African ones will kill you. Perhaps they can be tamed, but it definitely did not seem so.

I see that link now.

With all the many thousands of animals species humans will be wiping out the next few decades (as humans' population reaches 9,000,000,000) I had a difficult time calling this trampling by a threatened animal "capital punishment".

But we'll get them back, don't worry! We'll erase this elephant's whole species!

Poaching of endangered species is unacceptable. Once they are gone, they are gone. It's worth killing humans to prevent the elimination of animal species. We'll make more.

Poaching is wrong but I doubt these poachers are at the top of the economic ladder. I don't know much about the economy of Zimbabwe but the poachers are probably facing some hardships if they're the ones doing the dirty and dangerous "work" here. I have more condemnation for the leaders of the poaching ring and the buyers who are creating demand for it. And also, crazy notion, I simply don't take much pleasure in someone else's violent death.
