They were everywhere! Tons of little holes in the ground where they came up. Tons of carcasses!
Tons of little brown exoskeletons on the trees and leaves!
After I hit one off my back and then had two in my hair, I decided to cut it short and leave.
My dog was freaked out by the cicada song they were singing anyway.
Gross!!!

There they were, finally, stuck on the undersides of fresh green leaves, on the trunks of trees and on the sides of fence posts in Clove Lakes Park on Staten Island.

After weeks of anticipation, Staten Island has seen some of the first of a brood of cicadas that has matured underground for 17 years, and which will be continuing to emerge in the coming days to begin the last, amorous and clamorous stage of its life cycle.

Different regions of the country have cicadas on different cycles, called broods. The brood that's local to where I live isn't due for three more years.

This is the year for 17-year brood 2, that is concentrated in CT, MD, NC, NJ, NY, PA, VA

The only reason it is in the news is that it is in the region of the media centers. Makes for an easy "the killer cicadas are coming" story without much travel expense.
