Convos with Mom about current events

Me:
Ari (my 18 y/o niece who was raised listening to my political vents during the Shrub administration) called me the other day about the IRS/Tea Party hearings. She was frustrated that the IRS wasn't more forthcoming. She said they looked guilty. I listened and I did not reply because at least she watched and is concerned, although I wanted to tell her that this was being overblown. My biggest fear is that kids Ari's age are being raised in a world where they know nothing about journalism, truth and that most aren't motivated to find the truth.
Mom:
All the talk about the Tea Party is just a distraction.
Me:
I know. Not only that, but you'd think that the IRS would 'fess up and admit that b/c the Tea Party was historically known for not paying taxes, that there was good, nonpartisan reason to target the group.

Me: The tornado in OKC was devastating. These storms are getting worse and worse.
Mom: You ain't seen nuthin' yet...

Mom:
Did you see on the news where a company is being investigated because they are hiding all of their money overseas to avoid paying taxes?
Me:
Mom, it's sad that what we call news did not also tell you that there are also thousands of other companies just like that one and no one is talking about any of them because they are in bed with the politicians. Now if you or I were to try that, we'd be investigated so fast our heads would swim.

Mom:
(Looking at the excessive amount of crossing guards and garden-tending city workers that we passed while I was driving...)
That's a waste of our tax dollars.
Me:
At least they're working. It's better than having our tax dollars go elsewhere.

It is sad that so much is hidden and unknown by even those like my Mom who are attuned to reality minus all the facts.
