Submerged Structure Beneath Sea of Galilee Stumps Archaeologists
..............
Its thousands of years old a conical, manmade behemoth weighing hundreds of tons, practically begging to be explored.
The problem is its at the bottom of the biblical Sea of Galilee. For now, at least, Israeli researchers are left stranded on dry land, wondering what finds lurk below.
The monumental structure, made of boulders and stones with a diameter of 70 meters (230 feet), emerged from a routine sonar scan in 2003. Now archaeologists are trying to raise money to allow them access to the submerged stones.
Its very enigmatic, its very interesting, but the bottom line is we dont know when its from, we dont know what its connected to, we dont know its function, said Dani Nadel, an archaeologist at the University of Haifa who is one of several researchers studying the discovery. We only know it is there, it is huge and it is unusual."

(13,485 posts)that it may be a simple slag pile from mining or making building stone. Over centuries it would be a conical pile of rock and rubble. It could have been dropped there by ships or carried there by long floating piers.
It's not likely to be a submerged alien space ship, guys!

(101,316 posts)You can get formations like your picture (there's a space between the 't' and 'm' for some reason, by the way). But you can also get less regular outcrops, like this one from Wikipedia
