GMO Labeling Bill Voted Down In Senate
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/23/gmo-labeling-bill-genetically-modified-food_n_3325972.html
WASHINGTON -- The United States Senate decided again Thursday that it simply does not want to let states tell people whether or not they are eating genetically modified food.
The Senate voted overwhelmingly -- 71 to 27 -- against an amendment to the sweeping farm bill, squashing a measure that would not have required labeling of genetically modified organisms, but merely would have let states decide if they wanted to require such labeling.
"The concept we're talking about today is a fairly commonsense and non-radical idea," Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), the sponsor of the amendment, said shortly before the vote. "All over the world, in the European Union, in many other countries around the world, dozens and dozens of countries, people are able to look at the food that they are buying and determine through labeling whether or not that product contains genetically modified organisms."
Sanders has noted that more than 3,000 ingredients are required to be labeled, but genetically modified ingredients are not part of that list. His state and Connecticut have passed laws to require such labeling, but Sanders said local leaders fear that large biotech corporations such as Monsanto could sue the states on the grounds that they are preempting federal authority. He said his bill would make clear that states can do what they want on the issue.

Bernie Sanders of Vermont says he will continue to push for declaration on packaging of genetically modified ingredients
The Senate on Thursday overwhelmingly rejected an amendment that would allow states to require labeling of genetically modified foods.
Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont said his amendment was an attempt to clarify that states can require the labels, as several legislatures have moved toward putting such laws into place. The Vermont house and the Connecticut senate voted this month to make food companies declare genetically modified ingredients on their packages.
The Senate rejected the amendment on a 71-27 vote, during debate on a wide-ranging, five-year farm bill that includes generous supports for crops like corn and soybeans that are often genetically modified varieties. Senators from farm states that use a lot of genetically modified crops strongly opposed the amendment, saying the issue should be left up to the federal government and that labels could raise costs for consumers.
<...>
The Senate may consider more amendments to the farm bill this week, including others dealing with genetically modified foods. The legislation sets policy for farm subsidies, other rural programs and domestic food aid.

(2,424 posts)Perhaps they don't want to reveal the magnitude. More likely, they just guaranteed a campaign contribution.
We live in ALEC world. We eat ALEC food. We live ALEC law. Our future is ALEC vision.
We are no longer a Democracy. We are 100% a corporatist state, in the guise of Democracy, that provides just enough guns, nationalism, and religion to keep the populace pacified.

This is what happens when corporations own governments and the ethos of "We the People" is replaced by a corporate bottom line.

(19,053 posts)My facebook community is a mixture of mostly progressive but some conservatives, because we all share one cause, equal rights for adoptees. Everyone is civil about other matters, but I have been very uplifted to know that some conservatives are very much in the fight against gmo's and Monsanto in particular.
I so wish that people would be more into banding together for causes that they believe in rather than party politics. The GLBT community has been a shining light in this tactic. Lets band together on a specific issue rather than allow the PTB to divide us giving them free reign.
