I need free advice for a criminal offense and I don't know where to go.

Arizona State University use to give free legal advice to it's students. But that program was terminated.

I don't have much money. So I cannot afford a private attorney.

Do public defender's offices generally give out free advice without taking on the case?

time to understand what the facts are. Many public defenders are competent and generally know more about criminal law and procedure than average attorneys and evan above-average attorneys that practice in other areas. Many of them are busy with their own cases, but some are compassionate enough to briefly talk with someone who makes the first step of coming up to them in a courtroom after they've finished with their business. But some are too busy.

Go to courthouse and watch a few of the attorneys. Find one that you like. Preferably one that gets along well with the prosecutors and the judge. See if they can steer you in the right direction.

You ought to be able to get half an hour initial consultwith one or more criminal defense attys for free. This would not be a public defender -- those are appointed by the court.

that I have actually used:

http://www.justanswer.com/sip/law?r=ppc

IIRC, you only pay if you like the answer you get (from one of their attorneys) - if what they say answers your question and gives you the direction you're looking for. Then you pay as little or as much as you want. $5.00, $20.00, $100.00, however much you can afford and feel it was worth.

I can't say for sure that they still operate exactly the same as when I used them as it's been a few years, but it would be worth looking around the site. I think you might even be able to find a similar question asked by someone else that has already been answered there. Good luck!
